You get more food when you get home?
Seriously . ... What's the upside? I'm imagining that you probably get murdered if you lose.

You wonder how many would try to defect, but don’t knowing the punished that would certainly be inflicted on their families.

How does it differ here....where 6 year old girls get finger Ph'ed by their Olympic Committee Doctor as their reward.

I feel bad for their cheerleaders. They had an impersonator of their supreme leader enter their area, and some thought it was him.

I've heard rumors of Kim Jong-un winning the four man luge by himself at the Calgary Olympics.

I’m sure it was right after shooting 11 holes in one while playing golf for the first time. That, course, was after climbing the Mount Paektu volcano and changing the nasty, stormy weather by his sheer will into a sunny clear day.

After all that, is it no wonder he could win an Olympic 4 man race all by himself? ;)

You act as if they have a choice. It's a lose lose. Go to the olympics, or die. Win or die. and there's no way anyone from DPRK is winning anything with a steady diet of 4 grains of rice and dirty water every day.

How does it differ here? Good grief.

Oh, many are enriched here monetarily (in some cases), But if we learned anything from the women's gymnastics fiasco, many are abused for a system that benefits coaches and committees that are needy and greedy to the point of turning a blind eye to abuse and assault of minors. I am sure life in North Korea sucks and not just for Olympic athletes.

The entire Olympic thing to me has lost its palatability. The crazy excessive pageantry, the insane amounts of money poured into it..... it seems riddled with a obscenity to me no mater who the participating nation ia/are and whatever nation hosts it,.

Also the ridiculous amount of jingoism displayed by many of the fans. Like "our" young people are better than anyone else's simply because of where they were born.

  • Dictator Kim Jong-un sent 22 athletes to the sports extravaganza in South Korea
  • But they will return to North Korea having failed to win any medals
  • In the past, nation's sports teams have been shamed for failing to deliver success
  • Defector claims the 1966 World Cup squad were jailed and tortured for failure
Kim Jong-un's Winter Olympics squad will return to North Korea having failed to win any medals amid fears their lack of success in PyeongChangcould land them in jail.

The dictator sent 22 athletes to the sports extravaganza in South Korea, supported by an army of 280 cheerleaders.

But they will return to Pyongyang without any of their sports stars making it onto podiums.

In the past, there have been reports of teams being punished or publicly shamed for failing to deliver at major international sports events. The tyrant's grandfather Kim Il Sung is said to have arrested and locked up the entire 1966 World Cup squad in gulags after they were knocked out of the tournament in the second round.

North Korea, having qualified for the tournament for the first time, slayed European giants Italy 1-0 setting up a clash with fellow first-time qualifiers Portugal in the next round.

They were 3-0 at half time but threw the game away, eventually and lost 5-3.

Worse was to come when it emerged that players had been seen 'carrying on' with women and drinking just days before the crunch match.

On returning home, authorities arrested the players, publicly shamed them and put them in a concentration camp.

In his book, The Aquariums of Pyongyang, defector Kang Chol-hwan revealed how one member of the team became famous for his ability to endure torture while another was nicknamed 'The Cockroach' for eating any bug he could catch to stave off hunger while being kept in a so-called 'Sweatbox' chamber.

In 2010, there were claims that the North Korean World Cup coach and players were punished by the government after they lost all three of their games in the tournament in South Africa.

Radio Free Asia said that the Korean squad, apart from two foreign-based players, were subjected to 'harsh ideological criticism' after their team conceded the most goals of all 32 at the tournament.

Their coach Kim Jong-hun was also publicly humiliated and sentenced to hard labour for their performance, it claimed.
