What non-sporting events do you look forward to every year?

It’s been said that happiness is to having someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to, like another Ranger Dan nomination post or psuro sig pic.

So with that in mind, what non-sporting events do you look forward to every year? Perhaps it might be for example: the first day of hunting season, the first day of fishing season, an annual Jimmy Buffett concert, vacationing at the same time of year at the same place every year, Thanksgiving, and/or Christmas.

For me I have two:

The Westmoreland County Arts & Heritage Festival – always close to the 4th of July every year it’s a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of good food (I always get a crab cake sandwich and pie from Sand Hill Berries farm, mmmmm), and good entertainment and I’ve actually bought Penn State related art work for home.

The other – Penn State’s Trash-to-Treasure. What started out years ago as something to do with my son and another excuse to go visit State College and bring back some ice cream from the creamery, has turned into something of a tradition for my son and I. He just loves it.

After we shop, and we have got some really good buys over the years, he and I go to breakfast. Last year was our first time at the Naked Egg based on a suggestion from this board and we’ll bring home four to five half-gallons of ice cream from the creamery. I particularly enjoy the time spent with him driving to and from State College as we chat about anything and everything along the way. That’s the very best part of the day, spending time with him.

So what are some of yours?

When you get to be my age, waking up on January 1st is a big deal. :) All kidding aside, I love the Christmas season, and consider the day after Thanksgiving until January 6th (12th Night) as one, long, glorious celebration. The smell of a live tree, the crackling sound of a fireplace, the beauty of the light displays, the unforgettable taste of eggnog, the smiles of the children as they open their gifts, the crunch of snow beneath my feet, Christmas parties filled with good friends and good food.....it's magical beyond my ability to absorb it all.

This. All of this. Except that I include Thanksgiving weekend because that sets the tone for the rest of the year, a thankful and glorious celebration.

I always look forward to the Fourth. We have a parade in our neighborhood (it's a large area) every year....

I use to love Thanksgiving and Christmas until I became an adult on my own with a family.

Thanksgiving is ok, except the fact we host it, get everything ready and clean up with no help, but we choose to do that. IMO Christmas is overrated. I like the season, but all the decorating, shopping, baking, wrapping for one day?

That's why I celebrate for 7 weeks. My wife and I are generally not big into the social scene, preferring quiet evenings at home, but last Christmas season we attended 6 parties and had 2 of our own. That averages 1 a week. One party we attended was a group of 35 or 40 people, but most were just a dozen or so close friends, or family members. Whenever I'm feeling low, I remember the joys of those gatherings, and looking forward to them again next Christmas immediately brightens my spirits.

I have two...the day my kids get home from college for summer break and the day they leave to go back to school.

Your post illustrates something I don't have a name for but is basically is when something is supposed to be pleasant but because of all the crap people feel they're expected to do it becomes unpleasant. So the point of Thanksgiving is for everyone to get together and appreciate each other and be grateful and all but somehow all this work gets involved that people feel they're expected to do and it becomes a chore instead. You should simply do less for Thanksgiving and scale down the whole affair but even if you wanted to I know what the obstacle would be, namely your wife wouldn't want to. Women are sooooo socialized into thinking all this work around the house is necessary instead of voluntary.

Then there's Christmas and again it's, we gotta do this, we gotta do that, etc. No, just don't do it, or do much less. Do whatever you want because the point is for you to be happy, not to decorate and shop and bake and wrap. I think only kids should even get gifts at Christmas. Adults feeling obligated to buy each other gifts seems silly.

Have you taken down your Christmas lights yet?

Well...um...we did take down the tree in early February, but we still have some of the outside lights up and I turn on the lighted snowman every time we get a couple of flakes. The leads our neighbors to think my wife and I are flakes.;)

The National Memorial day concert from the Capitol in Washington DC.That should be required watching for all Americans to remind them of the sacrifice of others so we can enjoy the lifestyles we do.
