....was not that Mark didn't wrestle that great - it happens (many things can cause it), but the lack of scrambling ability by Mark. Kemerer finished quickly on so many shots - was really kind of shocked by that as Mark has been a premier scrambler in the past. Mark looks like he has put on quite a bit of muscle - I wonder if it has diminished his scrambling ability to some degree relative to his first couple years.

Personally, I'm not worried in the least. It was a sloppy match from Mark. This isn't VJ vs Bull. I actually think Mark will win fairly easily next time.

What surprised me most was that Mark wasn't able to ride Kem. He's ridden Zahid, BoJo, Amine, and everyone else. Kemerer is great at that weight, and Mark flipping the script will not be easy--but if anyone is up to the task of making the necessary adjustments, it's Mark Hall and his coaches.

Let's go back to old internet adages...

Mark was sick

Mark was training through it

Mark got carvered

Mark was bothered by the long bus ride

Mark was bothered that not enough psu fans were allocated tickets

Mark has a tough cut

Or maybe

Kemdawg wrestled the perfect match, on the perfect night, in front of his home crowd, his family and he earned it.

Yeah I'll go with this ^^^

Mark reminded me of Aaron the week before not paying attention and giving up easy access to his legs that he never does. Years ago when we started our run, our freshman did that quite a bit. They'd be winning and lose at the end, giving up takedowns, allowing easy access to their legs, and not paying attention. Simply not concerned with Mark at all.

Huh? I wasn't trying to take anything away from Kemerer, nor was I attempting to make an excuse for Hall. Merely stated how surprised I was that Mark could not defend any of the shots and turn them into scrambles. Mark has been able to create scramble situations on very high quality shots against some world-class wrestlers - Kem finished shot after shot cleanly and quickly. Extremely surprising if you ask me.

Kem using DT’s trainer - right Iowa guys? How else to explain the 2 weight jump and looking yoked at his new weight

Wasn't aimed at you.

This reminded me of the Nolf/Martinez Match up (first match) where Martinez went all in on the Physical nature of his first few moves. When Nolf weathered that storm Martinez body was exhausted (he mentally and physically was all in on those first few big moves)

Same thing here, Hall thought he could bully Kem (Almost worked) after falling short and Kem showing how capable he was. I think Hall was a mental and physical wreck at that point.

Look for Hall to pick his spots in future and physically I think he will look very different in the 2nd half of the next match. JMO

Hall didn't look great for whatever reason, the reason may or may not be because Kemerer was just better than expected. I am excited because their next match is a toss up and not a Kemerer loss, just like 165 will be.

Everybody knows Kemdog hung with the magic man while making the jump, but just like it was no big deal that Gable used to give out 3 extra scholarships per year - when Iowa does it, it is not that big a deal.;)

Hall v Kemerer at Rutgers will be really fun. #3 seed (right now) is Lydy (PUR), with only one loss. It was to Kemerer.

Lydy is lights out this year, including handing Steiert (UNI) his only two losses this year. Mark is such a cool cat, he'll be fine, but I'll add - there's a reason the matches are wrestled.

Bummer that it takes Mark out of the Hodge race, but pretty much everyone had been annointing him the national champ at the season start. This is a good loss if there is such a thing. He will not be taking anything for granted and will be sharp from here forward. I think he wins by at least 3 points the next two times he faces Kem.

I think Mark just went for broke right at the start and he darn near pulled it off. His CG was just a little too far forward when he brought Kemerer to the mat. If he could have stopped his momentum, we'd be having a completely different discussion today.

I think it comes down to, Mark put a lot of energy into that throw. If it works he wins (I think he got ripped on the call). He didnt get the call and I think he had nothing left. i think his sloppy wrestling was just that he had no energy after that throw. Mark wins 5-2 at big tens

Every time MH has lost in Carver he came back to avenge the loss in the Big Tens and NCAA final...

Also, whichever teams lost the Cenzo/Marinelli match won the dual.

Finally brought myself to watching this again. Others have mentioned this reversal--I think MK had a really great response to Mark's typical (and usually so smothering) ride. The way he gets his right foot under him and swivels his hips low and wide neutralizes the leg ride. I'm not a technician though, so curious what others think.

Mark Hall was defeated by a superior wrestler. That's it. If Hall wasn't feeling well or whatever reason we want to speculate, he was out-shot, out-hustled, and out-wrestled. The Pennsylvania kid beat the Minnesota kid. Period.
