It was in the 4th I believe. Happened along the sidelines. Barkley was saying something to coach and coach just shook his head, walked away with a reaction like "look at this guy!" I'm thinking SB was trying to convince coach to put him back in the game.

SB wanted to leave early and go to BW3!

If your thinking that, you're saying he's a selfish player. What in his past would lead you to that conclusion?

I've read in a couple of post-game articles praising Barkley about how he never quits, even when on the sidelines. The articles said he was in the ear of a few coaches to get Nick Eury in the game, so I'm guessing something along those lines is what was caught on camera. Eury got a carry per the boxscore, and Andrew Callahan reported he was in for one snap. It would seem Barkley won this round with coach. :)

I remember seeing the exchange - the way Barkley said it and the way Franklin reacted, my first thought was Barkley half-seriously asking Franklin if he could play a few snaps on defense. We were down to the third or fourth string guys at the time, and I'm pretty sure the defense was on the field. Whatever it was that Barkley was asking for, Franklin made it pretty clear that it wasn't going to happen!

One or none of the above.

PS:

I know a good counselor for people obsessed with lipreading coach and players communications from 20 and above rows up in a football stadium. If interested, please let me know.

PS release 2.0 What Barkley said to CJF had something to do with beans and both the propulsion effect to runners and the resistance effect on pursuit while running the football.

PSU notebook: Franklin, Barkley laud Lake-Lehman’s Nick Eury

A highly productive running back at Lake-Lehman, Nick Eury made his college debut for Penn State on Saturday night.

STATE COLLEGE — Saquon Barkley may have stolen the show. But after the game, he and coach James Franklin wanted to talk about Nick Eury.

That would be the former Lake-Lehman standout running back, a redshirt freshman who got his first collegiate carry late in Penn State’s 56-0 throttling of Georgia State on Saturday.

Taking a handoff from reserve quarterback Billy Fessler, Eury gained 4 yards.

And to hear the Nittany Lions tell it, Barkley was ecstatic.

“There was nobody more excited on our sideline, and there was nobody coming up to me and (offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead) more during the game, wanting to get Eury on the field,” Franklin said.

“That was the thing he was probably most excited about was getting Eury a carry tonight.”

Barkley grinned when Eury’s name came up after the game.

“That was awesome for Nick Eury to get into the game,” Barkley said. “A lot of younger guys and walk-ons got to get in the game. As a player, I know everyone else on the team — all the starters and older guys — (appreciate them). You guys don’t see what they do for us throughout the week. On the scout team they give us a look so we’re able to do what we’re capable of doing.

“When you see those guys get on the field, they may not be starting, but they’ve been with us since the offseason. Winter workouts. Spring ball. All the hard work they put in. To see them get in the game, it’s amazing. It’s an exciting feeling.”

I heard that Franklin wanted him to stay until the end of the game for a free beverage.

We had a kid on our team that worked his butt off for three years and never played. One year, in JV, I was team captain. This kid, I'll call him "skippy" got in. We were up by something like ten points. There was 30 seconds to go and we were on their five yard like. we ran "skippy" off tackle and just missed a TD. I called timeout and we ran skippy again. Again denied when time ran out. My coach railed at me for calling timeout. I finally defended myself saying I wanted skippy to get a TD. He laughed, patted me on the back and never brought it up again...he did tell me to never call timeout in that situation again under any circumstances (he called the opposing coach to apologize).
