What would BOB's record have been last year?

Purely hypothetical obviously. 6-6 in regular season with CJF. Better/same/worse with BOB last year? What do you think?

I think at the least he would have beat Illinois, the decision to punt on 4th and less than 1 lost that game for us, and we all know OB would not have punted! But I would say 7-5 or 8-4. That oline would have been bad no matter who the coach was but the familiarity with the offense would have helped IMO.

that's an unanswerable question. What we do know is that a BillO

Team never would have looked as craptackulous under his guidance as what we witnessed this past Saturday. Despite his ego-centric shortcomings, BillO surrounded himself with competent coaches who could only make him look better.

5-7

8-4 regular season, at least. Hard to say on the Bowl,

since 8-4 likely gets us in a better Bowl (e.g., Outback) vs. the Pinstripe.

The most stunning thing about 2014 PSU wasn't the bad OL or Hackenberg's regression ---- it was that the team, frankly, often didn't seem to give a damn and had a very un-warrior-like mentality. We lost? Oh well, who cares?

That never happened with the O'Brien PSU teams. Always played with purpose. Always.

Shoot, even when Indiana and Ohio State were murdering us in 2013, the team still got excited and celebrated late TDs and was playing with purpose. O'Brien demanded such. Compare that to the "we quit, we lay down" attitude we took in the 4th quarter against Northwestern in 2014.

My favorite moment of the O'Brien era was the team AND a few coaches doing the "Jump Around" at Wisconsin in 2013. Badgers players and fans seriously were in shock. That was awesome, that "attitude" is what O'Brien brought.

I may be being harsh, but I'm not sure if Franklin has this "intangible." Between that and the play-calling, I am concerned.

Re: 8-4 regular season, at least. Hard to say on the Bowl,

Michnit never heard that about the Wiscy road game victory in 2013; loved it. I agree with your points about Obrien. Still hoping JF's offensive staff makes strides forward this year. Shoop and staff has that "it" factor and will win lots of games this year on its own.

I agree with much of what's in your post here, but not sure I agree....

...with the record you suggested. I think our offense would have performed noticeably better (though, with that OL, there's only so-much better it could have been), but with BO'B still here, that means John Butler would have been here too -- and I think that would have negated the better offense that BO'B would have brought.

I suspect our record would have been about the same with BO'B.

Unfortunately, I share the rest of the concerns you mentioned.

Probably around 6-6. Our O-line would have sucked regardless, though I feel like BOB would have probably schemed a bit better to overcome it. But our defense would have been worse in all likelihood -- possibly quite a bit worse.

At best, I'm thinking 7-4 for O'Brien. Honestly, though, no matter the coach, a few games were going to come down to inches. Maybe Bob would have been on the positive side of some losses unlike Franklin -- or maybe he would have come on the negative side of some wins that we actually got.

Here's a couple videos of the Jump Around at Wisky 2013

I was at that game, behind the PSU sideline. Sounds easy to say in retrospect --- but I felt that Jump Around coming too. The team was SOOOOO loose and SOOOOO confident in that game. What a great win.

I do like Shoop, I agree his staff does have that "it" factor. That said, as many of the dark years in the 2000s showed, a great defense combined with an iffy and unconfident offense that can't punch you in the mouth is not a winning combination.

Come on offense in 2015!!!!!!!!

JUMP AROUND!!!!

Difficult to say, but BOB inherited more talent than Franklin

Lots of leftovers from the Paterno Era like Hodges, Mauti, Carson, Still, Jones, ARob, etc. Certainly much better OL talent.

The two games that bothered me were the lack of aggression in trying to

make late first downs that would have iced the games against Maryland & Illinois. What message did this send to the team ?

Really? The Defense was a joke while he was here.

with how bad the OLine was and the lack of a WR threat and no ZZ I doubt we would have won more than 4 games. O'Brien knew what was coming back and he didn't do anything to address the lack of OL depth.

Sorry, he did a good job of bringing in Offensive Coaches, but his selection on D was very questionable... very

Lack of aggression by whom?

Coaches not aggressively pumping up players on sidelines?

Coaches not calling aggressive plays on offense?

Players not executing the called plays aggressively?

Just curious.

hafta agree on ALL points you make

Good call on Butler still being here... the change in the D was what saved our season, so no matter how much better Hack might have been, little offsets Butler.

My biggest concern is that I did not get that "penn state heart and fire" "penn state blood and guts" feeling that this program has been all about.

if it's not in evidence this year, then that is a reflection on the coaching. Franklin appears to be a strong cheerleader and inspires with the 'team theme' and lots of goosie bumps.

and if this were pee-wee or high school football even , that'd be fine..

it isn't, and it's not. i want warriors... and if that means genghis khan is running things, so be it.

With Butler at DC, Not a chance to go 8-4. The defense carried this team

last season. The hugely improved defense that is. With Butler in charge there is no way that team goes 8-4.

1st wife asked me a hypothetical question once regarding her friends...

Didn't work out well. Slept in the guest room for a month. I learned there is no value to these questions and therefore do not answer.

Would they even have played the game if BillO was still here? He was part of the reason the OL was in such bad shape and he didn't recruit many during his time here. Most of the RS Freshman were brought in by CJF

Re: 1st wife asked me a hypothetical question once regarding her friends...

Her: So, what do you think of my friends.

Me: They are nice.

Her: What do you mean "nice"? Do you like them?

Me; They are OK. I am glad you have them in your life.

Her: That does not convince me you like them.

Me: It does not matter that I like them. It matters that you like them

Her: What does that mean?

Me: Look, your friend XXXX appears to be a 40 year old drama queen - she makes drama out of everything unimportant, and ignores things that are important; your friend XXXX is desperately trying to act like her teenage daughter- just listen to her speak and watch how she dresses. And your other friend XXXX is a bit of a mooch - when was the last time she picked up the check - even when you and her alone went out for your birthday?

(long pause)

Her: I hate you.

Me: Yeah, I figured that would be the end result of this conversation.

I think you are reading this wrong...

Her: Do you think my friends are hot

Eric: Hell yeah, I'd wreck all of them!

5 or 6 wins going into the bowl game. Bill's DC was a major weakness, and not sure how much he could have helped the OFF.

Take ARob off the two BillO teams and see what happens.
