What's Flo Saying?

Yes... they explained partial scholarships... but sandwiched in-between those explanations seems to be something totally different.

I didn't get that at all. I thought they did a good job explaining the concept of partial scholarships. (The will always be a few conspiracy theorists that will cry foul.)

I think the OP is talking about the part where they make mention of nonathletic money that wrestlers may or may not be getting. In general though, Pyles and Willie are like the rest of us. They have no idea how the hell PSU keeps pulling this off...recruit after recruit. Outside of owning everyone on the mat that is...

I know what you mean because it jumped out at me too. I'll be honest, I don't think either of them have any idea what PSU is doing (outside of dominating the sport) or offering to get kids to come here. Because of that I feel they are just trying to be vague in their speaking because you never know what may come out in the future.

Verkleeren pretty much said he turned down full rides to earn a ship at Penn State. Not much to see here.

Even if money is coming from non-athletic scholarships. That's not illegal. Maybe other programs need to get more creative if that's the complaint.

I have posted it on here before, and again I guess.
One of the things this staff does as well or better than previous PSU wrestling administration's and other programs is they are keenly aware of all financial aid opportunities available and they make certain their student-atlethes apply for anything and everything they are eligible for.

That explains the financial part.

The other part.
If a kid dreams of national championships, individual and team, and post-graduate Olympic opportunities this is the place that kid needs to be. Build it and they will come.
It is built and they are clamoring to come here.

Im certainly not arguing that psu may or may not be doing anything shady... i'd (almost) bet my house it's all straight up. I was questioning Flo's intention... was it just something to stir the pot, or was it totally innocent, random chatter? Those two sometimes tend to be all over the place during a conversation... just wondered if it was me, or that they might be referring to something specific.

KEENLY aware, I saw what you did there referencing our prospective new 133...

It's "salary cap" management in today's sports landscape. Pure and simple. Why wouldn't someone who is elite in their field take a .5 ship to absolutely master their craft opposite a full ride to try and master their craft? That thought allows for 20 "elite" performers annually.

Throw in all the other aid opportunities for high achieving students and the puzzle becomes quite easy to solve. No other program can offer this. None! Because they can't offer the combination of the "room", the training regimen, the champion mentality, the "fun" environment, the personal process plan.

If PSU is doing something shady for the wrestling program, why are they not doing the same shady stuff for all the other "minor" sports that also offer partial scholarships? It makes no sense to cheat in the "minor" sports that lose money for you, why invite the NCAA to take a look at your Athletic Department. Also, if true, why would PSU suddenly allow the wrestling program to do this? All because Cael arrived on the scene? PSU has had a long history of a proud wrestling program with desires to win a national championship.

As several others have posted, the huge advantage PSU has is the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club and Cael. PSU is attracting wrestlers with Olympic aspirations and they are decided to "pay" more to attend PSU to receive better training to increase the chances of international success. They are making an investment in themselves. Consider, very few wrestlers anywhere are getting "full" athletic scholarships.

Thanks for the link. I listened to it and to me they were just talking like everyone else here, and I didn't hear anything that I interpreted negatively.

As Cali said, they explained the scholarships well, and have no knowledge of anything else so what can you really say? That is why they seemed vague. None of us know the rest of the story at PSU or any school.

Doesn't mean they are assuming bad at all, but trying not to talk about something they don't understand without saying something they don't really mean. They were being careful. Like writing here....we at times assume a writer means something they don't, so I try to be careful not to be misinterpreted....but it happens anyway.

For instance, I still hate the Rangers after 45 years of being a flyer fan. Some may interpret that to mean the Rangers are a worthy opponent.....Go Sens! ;)

Conspiracy theories always surround world domination.

I can't imagine what they'll say when we start taking their women too.

Now that I would like! However, if I'm being honest, the Flyers are the one that haven't been a good opponent for quite a while....but I'll stick to my delusions....and hope.

It's news, and it's what other fan bases, maybe some coaches, are saying...how in the world do they do what they (Penn State) do with the same number of scholarships we get? Gets Flo some clicks, that's all.

With the amount of compliance-related work and oversight re. scholarships at Penn State, there's NOTHING here, all. Coach Cael doesn't know all the rules in the NCAA Rulebook, nor can any coach, so he gets lots of help.
