When did Ryan Bates become a valuable commodity?

Was he even drafted?

Probably when he got some good o-line coaching, Roy! But there are a ton of late round or FA O-linemen in the NFL, and many from non power 5 schools.

Undrafted free agent.... he's started the last four games (plus playoff games) in his three year career and the Bears were desperate for O-line help leading to the generous offer. It seems like a what have you done for me lately and a good timing story.

I always thought Brendon Mahan had a much higher upside but he disappeared after making the Panthers scout team? Bates has the worst arms of any OL I have seen? His biceps look like my Grandpa's!

Didnt Anshan get hurt and starting out well with Carolina

He was always out of position with the lions. Should have been a guard or center not a LT.

When comparing with any of your grandparents, you might want to consider their entire body-especially legs and backside, and how they move in space with all they have, which all are the key for the variety of responsibilities that an OL has. My grandmother was relegated to a walker her last 20 years, to my knowledge wasn't pumping hand weights on her couch, but with one hand would pick up and throw a 20 lb dog who harassed her cat. Ryan seemed to do an admirable job wherever he was asked to at Penn State, and seems to be doing the same in the NFL. Good for him.

He came in to start late in the season for Buffalo after a ton of injuries throughout the line. The reshuffled line carried Buffalo through their run in the playoffs and Ryan aka Rick was credited with much of their success. He was definitely a key piece.
Bates had an enormous run in those late season games. Lots a chatter in here upstate NY about him making big play after big play.

It still doesn't change the fact that he has the whimpiest arms of any OL in the NFL. Come on MAN! You makin BANK! Start doing tons of push downs and have some Triceps pride for GODSAKES!!!
