Where are you on Franklin after the loss to Ohio State?

Which bests describes your thoughts on Franklin?

  • He needs to go. It’s unacceptable to lose to Ohio State and other top teams every time.

  • Still support him. There’s only a few coaches that win 10-11 games per season with his consistency.

  • I’ll give Franklin a little more time because our NIL isn’t at the same level as Ohio State..

  • I’m too afraid of falling back to support a change in head coach.

I picked the last one but several are applicable. Penn State is what it is. We have our warts. I think the Paterno era left us hopelessly behind in some ways, the region is not as talent-rich as it used to be, NIL levels the playing field somewhat. Like it or not, we’re not a dream school for upper echelon kids.

Franklin is a decent coach, Good recruiter and hires good assistants. They’re all just not good enough to win the big games. The OSU’s of the world have all the above and better. With that, it takes a miracle season to win even a BIG championship and miracles are in short supply.

I don’t expect to ever see a national championship in football again in my lifetime. With the current set up, if you’re a 5-12 seed, you need to beat 4 top 12 teams in consecutive games. 3 in succession if you’re 1-4. Sure, somebody will do it every year. I don’t expect that somebody to be us unless something changes dramatically.

I wonder if this is our ceiling. I look at Ohio State and the NIL they can have being in a major city full of businesses.

Maybe revenue sharing will help even the talent pool. We sell a sh!t load of tickets and offer a tailgate experience like few others (i.e. parking revenue).

Franklin can’t coach nor can he recruit 5 star talent. . We have the worst receiving corp in the country and our linebackers are amongst the worst. The OL has been horrible for years.

a little over the top. I mean, you’re not 7-1 and 4-1 with the worst receivers in the country, among the worst linebackers in the country and a horrible o-line.

This is my take as well. I will add this: The system is now set up to disappoint all but one team. Like the NFL, every other playoff team ends their season in disappointment -- with a loss. That is much different than going to a bowl game at a nice venue and ending the season with a 50:50 chance of finishing on top.

This would not be a problem if you could expect to advance to the "Super Bowl," but In this league there is no system of equity, so the same names are very likely to become dynasties. There is no draft order. There is no salary cap. But there is now a universal free agency -- every, single, year.

What makes the negatives in college football harder to stomach, at least for a PSU alum of my age, is the type of "student athlete" that we now see on the field. For me the lack of discipline -- to the point of "thug" behaviors, are a major turnoff. So are the celebrations (while losing!) and the chest pounding displays of low self esteem. What is being "taught" by the institution?

As for the OP, the poll is incomplete. Many would like to move on from Franklin, who has clearly reached his ceiling, but we are stuck with (in my view) a poorly negotiated contract. When the cost to the organization of replacement becomes extreme you have no options. In this case I believe performance was a secondary issue.

You guys need to see how the year finishes out. You might do well in the playoffs. Important to win the rest of your games as well.
I think you are right. The season has gone exactly as expected so far. A first round bye with a competitive game at happy valley would be huge for the program

Which wide receiver is catching passes for us against Washington? I'll wait for your answer.

I'm not a Franklin hater, in fact, I've been a supporter. The tide turned a bit for me with the cloak and dagger approach to player participation in the Peach Bowl. Fans who attended that game had a right to feel lied to.
The continued lack of discipline and selfishness by the players is another huge sticking point for me. Ohio State is a big hill to climb at this point, but a disciplined, well coached team would've gotten 2 or 3 more wins in the past 10 years.
There are other things about him that don't sit well. 110K stadium, and they lay an egg in big games repeatedly, and he finds some drunk kid to get into a verbal altercation with. LACK OF DISCIPLINE, and a terrible look. And the inept handling of uncomfortable questions in press conferences, and the passive-aggressive way he handles any remotely difficult question.
Play calling. You have to wonder if the offensive wizard (AK) called some of those plays at the end or if he was influenced to make calls. Clock Management.
I think he's clearly reached his ceiling and it's time to give someone else a try. His teams win when they have more talent and lose when they have less. They never outcoach anybody. Time for a change.

It's not a good.look when fans are yelling at players and coaches in front of their families and recruits. I get it, i hate.losing yet we had plenty of opportunities to change the outcome

I think we best them running the ball. We are a much better team. We are a ten point favorite especially with them having to fly to HV from the west coast after a very emotional and physically draining win versus USC

You cannot just line up and run the ball. You have to have at least the threat of a pass. We don't have that.

You can complain about a lot of things, but not the OP and his poll.

I voted with the majority but I don't give anything to the football program. The folks that spend the money will be the ones that matter.

Franklin is a good coach. Excellent at some aspects. — I’m good with everything he did or didn’t do on Saturday…. Except running the RB up the middle 3 times from the 3 yard line and throwing the ball on 4th down to an area that was a 5 to 2 disadvantage. That entire series was pre-eminent bonehead territory when you have a proven six foot six inch 265 lb All American TE that has proven to be invaluable …..and unstoppable at QB , close to the goal line. Give him at least 2 opportunities.

So apparently to Tyler Warren isn’t any good now?

Not what he said. No one would argue that Tyler is anything but elite. But you could see what happened when another elite player spied him, or double coverage. The point is that a true passing game threat has to have a group of dominant receivers. When you can take each guy out in man coverage, it's not a threat. Everyone else can play the run. That is what happened yesterday on most downs. OSU did change up with zone coverage but they also manned up well in that coverage.

If we win our last 4, we'll be ranked 3 or 4, we can't win the conference, but we'd still get a good seed and be in the playoffs, none of that will happen if we start fussing about changing HC. Let's have the club reboot and get ready for Washington . A high seed and a playoff birth would be huge for our program.

As I posted in another thread… I’m old enough to remember losing by three TDs to Alabama and still winning the natty.

Agreed. We're at worst 5 if we win out and as high as 3...putting us 5 or 6 in the playoff. No one should be angry with that scenario. Then we have to win at least 1 playoff game.

You guys have a pretty low bar for a team that is going to lose a lot of its best players next year. In my opinion Allar is a true 5-star pocket passer, and we never get that kind of QB. We have the best tight end, ever. He can pass, run, block, receive contested balls, even snap. Those kinds of players -- smart and skilled -- are rare and tough to get. So if not now, when?

I think we are at the point where we are never going to get the right Jimmy's and Joe's unless we have better X's and O's. We have to be serious about preparation and discipline. That does not seem to be showing.

The best players flock to the best coaches. Is that James Franklin given the record of under-performance in big games?

JVP recruited high school kids by convincing their parents. That era is gone. What is the sale's pitch right now? It feels like make or break -- today -- not tomorrow.

Yup. This season is not over and we still have a chance. But if not this year then we are in trouble. Among the definite or potential losses to the draft:
Drew Allar
Nick Singleton
Abdul Carter
Kevin Winston
Dani Dennis-Sutton
Tyler Warren
Zane Durant
Jaylen Reed
Sal Wormley
Kobe King

But the other teams we play won’t have the athletes at DB that OSU has, so they won’t be able to keep Warren from getting open, or if they want to focus solely on him, then others will be able to get open.
