Some have said to wait until he gets all of his own guys in starting roles for his true value to shoe along the offensive line. Can someone list who his recruits are, and how close they may be to future roles? Thanks.

Using that logic, he gets no credit for any of the all-conference guys he coached at BC.

Pass protection this season has been better than I can remember in Franklin’s tenure.

It’s still early in the season, I think it’s still okay to wait for meaningful progress in run blocking. But if I took anything from the IU game, it feels like our TEs and RBs struggle in run blocking as well. So is that on Traut? Yurcich? Scheme? I’m not sure the struggles in the run game come solely down on the OL. It feels like a mix of things - interior OL, hesitation at RB, TEs missing blocks, really good run-stopping defenses, etc.

IMO, we only need the run game to be mediocre with the talent we have in the pass game. 4/per carry and 150ish/a game should set up the pass game nicely.

I believe Landon Tengwall is his reruit (6'6" 300 and will get bigger). Just a Freshman this year. He was one of the crown jewels in the '21 class. I think a very high 4 star out of Maryland.
On gopsusports, Tangwall is listed at 326 now. He's a monster for a freshman. I don't think he has much bad weight either based on the pics I've seen. He could probably go another 10lbs no problem.

The tackles are playing well, and the overall line is pass protecting well. Our trouble seems to be the guards and center run blocking. Fundamentals and technique can only get you so far if you are undersized or not athletic.

I am surprised we haven't seen him in some spot duty. I thought we would by now. And no I didn't expect him to be starting but with some of issues on the OL I thought he might see some playing time against Ball St. or Villanova. 🤷‍♂️

I expect him to start or have significant playing time next year. He was super hyped out of HS. Sure hope he is the real deal.

You make a great point that it is not just the O-line. A team game requires all players to be pulling their weight. With that said, we need to see progress this year with the O-line and certainly better next year.

I don't think Trautwein has responsibility for how well the RB's block, not sure on the tight ends. I missed the whiff block by Strange at the goal line but I'm sure the coaches have been all over him about that.

Running back is one of PSU's weakest positions this year. With Cain a long way from 100 percent they do not have great speed. They don't have backs who can beat linebackers to the sideline and that is a really big deal. They also don't have backs who can outrun safeties in the open field.

Some of the running problems are simple mental errors by the running backs. The final TD at Auburn was a beautiful play where receivers went left, misidrection went right and Cain went left and cut back right into a hole. they ran almost the same play against Indiana and the hole was just as big, but instead of cutting back, Lee ran left right into the linebacker's arms. Lee plays like he can just run over people but that doesn't usually work out too well in the B1G.

His guys are 5-0, #4 in the country, and have a big game this weekend. He's been there 2 years, he is their OL coach and owns it. The TE's coached by Howle need some looking into as well. They are big, fast, and can catch the ball or run the wildcat, but part of the run game problems are on them whiffing and the backs dancing. It's not just an OL problem.....far from it.

Excellent reply!

I am not buying the “ RB’s are the real problem “ explanation. Cain looked good early, then got dinged in the Auburn game. Hopefully, he can come back. Lee showed a lot of promise last year and he also catches the ball better this year. He does need to run lower and be more decisive.
Lovett is a something of a proven commodity. Ford has looked good at times in all phases and has good speed, but I don’t know that he can be a 20 carry per game guy.
Coziah Holmes is a mystery. A lot of runs last year he came very close to breaking off a big one. He looks the part. I don’t watch practice, so I don’t know why he doesn’t play more. Is it fumbling, or does he not know the playbook well enough ?
I still think the OL, and that would include the TE’s , is the main problem. Maybe it’s the coaching changes. There are younger guys I expected to see in the interior OL but am not seeing. Are Sal Wormley and Des Holmes both hurt ?
I don’t see much of a push inside. Losing Thorpe may have been a bigger deal than we expected.
The TE’s also seem to be missing a lot of blocks. It is a new system and these guys are relatively inexperienced. Since they can all catch pretty well, maybe getting onto the field should be primarily determined by blocking success.

I think we have a fairly good sized playbook. Yurcich likes tempo and sometimes our guys miss an assignment during the quick hustle to the line and snap plays.

If this team gets rolling, I think we could be an explosive team that can grind out drives. We just don't have the consistency down yet. Certain things have improved every week. And perhaps that is a good thing. If we can continue to improve and nearly peak around Halloween, that would be perfect.

Sal Wormley has an injury that has rendered him unable to play this season.

Regarding Tengwall, I just saw the updated Iowa depth chart, they have moved a true freshman into a starting guard spot. I wonder if this is something that might bite them,? Or is that a move they feel is beneficial?

One of the Iowa posters indicated they hacmve been rotating some Freshman and Sophmores along the OL trying to figure out their rotation. Apparently one of their more senior Guards has been out for a few weeks.
