Since LJ left, bad overall d-line recruiting and development for years. Some stars, a few breakout games, but no dominant unit with depth over a sustained season. Without an offense that scores 28+, that played right into Bielema's wheelhouse today: hide my QB and wear down your defense with the run.
Sean's a great kid and clearly wants to win, but he isn't a pure pocket QB. He needs to be able to run and set his feet before he throws. 1/2 a Sean can't do that. With the QB being the most important position and us not having a serviceable backup, so much for our offense.
I will also add that this was game 7. Our opponents now have abundant film on this offense, defense, and the individual players. Obviously injuries play a big role and dropped passes kill you, but I think these coaches got out scouted for most of the game. The commentators were even saying how Illinois was nailing every run/pass call on defense. That's not an accident. Either we got out scouted or our players and systems just cannot adjust in-game to new assignments or wrinkles that their opponents throw at them. Unless the next Barkley is on the roster, PSU looks like it will limp quietly into 2022.
