I worked for Magic Market - later to be name UniMart!

I was in the marketing department for 7-Eleven. Sheetz was first with kiosk hot food ordering, store branded soda/cigarettes, cheap store branded gas, and dozens of pumps. They are all corporately owned so the standard per store is very high (compared to 7-Eleven and their franchise model). Wawa saw what Sheetz did and emulated it - maybe added more food options. But Sheetz was first.

I grew up with Sheetz so it pains me to say this, but they absolutely suck. Went way down hill once they got so big. I'm indifferent to WaWa. Haven't been to one in over 7 years.

One has a bathroom for customers in desperate need - the other doesn’t.

not sure you can make a sweeping argument about that.

Sheetz has bathrooms in all the ones I've visited. (Actually, I don't recall if they have bathrooms at the Pugh Street facility in State College.)

Wawa has bathrooms in all of their newer facilities (built in the last 15-20 years), as well as many of their remodeled older facilities. Some of their really old facilities, which have not yet been remodeled, do not have bathrooms.

BTW, have you been to the new Wawa in DC? It's their largest store in the country.

They have a couple in DC and Northern VA - haven’t been yet though. The one in DC is on 18th I believe so not far from where I work. Will check it out though and report back!

Also, the Wawa was an older one that didn’t have a bathroom - at least not a customer one.

The daughter of a good friend now lives in DC. She grew up on Wawa, and was quite excited about the new facility. Her biggest complaint, at least for the 1st week it was open, was that the lines for ordering food were insane, because so many people attempting to place an order had never before been to a Wawa, and didn't know how to use the ordering kiosks.

Wawa coffee is great! And it’s $1 per cup for any size. Better then Dunkin IMHO with lots of different brews to select from. The hoagies are good and are made with fresh baked rolls done in the store that day. Plus they always have soft pretzels available - my snack weakness. Also their brands of ice tea and lemonade are very good with both regular and diet available. I also like that they have prepackaged apple slices, carrots and celery, hummus, cheese and crackers, and other small plate items.

Someone said their gas is watered down. Does anyone have any evidence of this? I’ve been running my cars on wawa gas for years with no problems.

They dont water down their gas. They may not use the same detergents as some of the majors but they don't water down the gas

I love both. Either one is way better than anything else out there. Wawa has healthier options but I don’t go to a gas station for health food. Give me 4 chili cheese dirt dogs from Sheetz!!! I like Wawa coffee. And I can’t forget...The Gobbler sub from Wawa around Thanksgiving time

No love for Turkey Hill?? I only know of two that are still around. One in Myerstown and one in Adamstown.

Wawa has for the most part renovated or moved into all new facilities. One complaint I would have is they are getting very expensive, especially on non-Wawa products. Sheets has generally costs less, so a few points for them.

Wawa has stores in Virginia and gone pretty heavily into Florida, but have so far skipped NC, SC, and GA

Sheetz has a bunch of stores now in NC and recently established a distribution center in Burlington, NC

Depends on the owner. Been to both where some are good and some are bad.

Wawa. Not even subject to debate.

LOL. Please....

SHEETZ NAMED CONVENIENCE STORE OF THE YEAR, BECOMING THE FIRST TWO-TIME AWARD WINNER
In the award's 28-year history, Sheetz becomes the first convenience store to win the honors twice, earning the 1994 and 2017 titles.

Altoona, PA (July 19, 2017) —Sheetz, one of America’s fastest-growing family-owned and operated convenience retailers for more than 65 years, is proud to announce that is has been named Convenience Store Decisions’ 2017 Chain of the Year—an annual award honoring a convenience chain displaying industry innovation and superior retail experience.

“We are so proud to be recognized by Convenience Store Decisions as the 2017 Convenience Store Chain of the Year,” said Sheetz President and CEO Joe Sheetz. “This recognition truly belongs to our employees and to the customers who have supported us for the past 65 years. Sheetz would not be the company it is today without great employees and loyal customers.”

The 2017 honor marks Sheetz as the first convenience store in the award’s 28-year history to hold the title for a second year. Sheetz was first honored as Chain of the Year in 1994, after a decade of rapid coastal expansion with the chain spanning 190 locations. Sheetz has since expanded to over 550 locations in six states and in the past year been recognized by Fortune as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, a Top 12 Best Places to Work for Women and Top 35 Best Workplaces for Millennials.

“Sheetz remains a beacon of innovation that every convenience store chain can admire. It is a family-owned business that remains true to its employees and the communities it serves” said John Lofstock, Editor-in-Chief of Convenience Store Decisions. “Family businesses made this industry what it is today and as long as outstanding companies like Sheetz continue to thrive, the convenience store industry will continue to reach new heights.”

Sheetz remains one of America’s fastest growing family-owned and operated retailed, with eight Sheetz family members spanning three generations currently serving on the Executive Committee, and eight family members holding a role in the business today.
