Since we’re in a down period for sports to me until March Madness, I got to thinking about baseball.

Many can recite the greatest players ever for their teams, like Honus Wagner being the Pirates all-time shortstop and Pie Traynor being the third baseman. What I’m looking for is what would be your all-time team for your favorite team in YOUR lifetime as a fan. I know we have Phillies, Orioles, Yankees, Mets and even Red Sox fans in here. Some of those teams should be very, very good.

Now I haven’t consulted any statistics. This is strictly from my eye test, and I know from waking up in the morning to some females that my eyes have deceived me. God bless the person who invented make-up, but I digress.

For those of you who consult WAR and all those statistics, that’s fine, but let me state this, whatever Wally Pipp’s WAR was, was INCREDIBLY WRONG because Pipp’s replacement was none other than Lou Gehrig, maybe the greatest first baseman of all-time. So there’s no convincing me WAR is accurate because how does anyone know how good any replacement will be?

Now keep in mind this includes over 20 consecutive losing seasons of Pirates baseball so my selections were talently challenged. There are probably some good players I just can't think of at the moment too.

Catcher – The Panamanian Road Runner, Manny Sanguillen. Sanguillen was for a number of years the second best catcher in the National League. The best just happened to be the best catcher in the history of the game in Johnny Bench. Honorable Mention: Jason Kendall

First Base – Pops, the Captain, Wilver Dornell Stargell. If it weren’t for Stargell, the options are not great: Sid Bream, Jason Thompson.

Second Base – Had I been born five years earlier, this would be clearly Bill Mazeroski, the king of the double play. I loved watching Dave Cash and hated to see him go to the Phillies, but my pick would be his replacement, Rennie Stennett. Before injuring his leg, he was coming into his own and hitting .336 only points behind his teammate Dave Parker in the batting race. He was never the same after that.

There have been some other good second basemen: Jose Lind, Phil Garner and Neil Walker, but I think Walker defensively is more of a product of analytic field positioning.

Shortstop – Gene Alley might be the choice here were I older but I’m going to go with Jumpin Jack Wilson over Jay Bell and Tim Foli. As you can see, shortstop hasn’t been a position of great strength for the Pirates.

Third Base – Bill Madlock. A two-time batting champion with the Pirates, the Mad Dog was solid. Honorable Mention: Bonilla, Hebner and not sure if Freddie Sanchez should be considered a 3B or a 2B. Would of loved if Alvarez would of become this pick.

Left field – The pre-steroids Barry Bonds.

Center field – Andrew McCutchen – far more bat than Van Slyke or the antelope, Omar Moreno.

Right field – the Great One, Roberto Clemente, over Dave Parker.

RHP – This may become Garrett Cole but for now my choice is Doug Drabek in a close call over Bert “be home” Blyleven.

LHP – Liriano over Candelaria. Perhaps if I were a bit older Bob Veale might be my choice.

RP – Going to go with Kent Tekulve over Dave Giusti.

Mgr – The Irishman, Danny Murtaugh.

So what would be your favorite team’s starting lineup in your lifetime?

Al Oliver could be your backup behind Stargell at first. I'd take pre-back issues Bob Robertson over Bream or Thompson.

Agreed on Oliver. Shame Robertson didn't stay at his '71 and '72 levels very long.

As a kid growing up and coming of age in the early 70's, I had two pennants on the wall in my room: Phillies and Red Sox. For whatever reason, the BoSox stuck and the sillies fell by the wayside (may have been that awful, generic Vet stadium back in the day- I ran around on it and it was like concrete!)

Anyway, I digress. here are the players I remember from roughly the early 70's on...

Pitcher: Pedro Martinez. That 1999 year was simply incredible.
Catcher: Carlton Fisk. As important as Varitek was to the team recently, Fisk gets the nod.
1b: After considering Mo Vaughn, had to go with Yaz
2b: No contest for me here, Dustin Pedroia
ss: Nomar. couldn't really think of anyone to compete here...
3b: Wade Boggs. great pure hitter- and not a bad fielder either
LF: Jim Rice. thought about Manny, but he was a bit too much of a head case. Rice was
simply awesome.
CF: Fred Lynn. here's another difficult choice for me as Ellsbury was/is damn good
RF: Dewy Evans. No contest.
DH: David Ortiz. Ditto no contest. Simply great clutch hitter
Closer: Jonathan Pappelbon. Lots of good ones, Including the guy who ended up at
Oakland (name escapes me), but Pap helped them end "the curse".

That would be one heck of a Red Sox team. Who's your left handed starting pitcher? Bill Lee, Tudor come to mind right away.

Shoot, forgot about a lefty. Having trouble coming up with a dominant lefty outside the two you mentioned... Tudor, I think would be my pick. I may have to go do some research...

Bonds & Van Slyke were such a$$hats, I just can't have either of them out there (based on cutch's efforts to date, Slick could at least have an argument to start in center otherwise)

To alleviate that, I'll keep Cutch at CF & put a young Pops in left. Then I'll run out Al Oliver, Jason Thompson or even Bob Robertson at 1st

Probably disagree on Wilson over Bell at short. I definitely disagree with Francisco over the Candy Man

Nice list. Stennett was my favorite Bucco when I was a young fan. I was at the game when he broke his leg...too bad since as you said, his career was off to a very bright start.

My Pirate team would be:
Catcher...Smokey Burgess
First Base...Stargell
Second...Mazeroski
Short...Groat
Third...Don Hoak
Left...Bonds

Virdon over Cutch FairG? I know Virdon was terrific defensively but Cutch also a Gold Glover and league MVP.

That was a tough decision, but in my youth I watched the Bucs win a World Series with Virdon in center. I am still waiting for just a National League Pennant with Cutch. By the way, good thread John.

Good list here of my 2nd favorite team. Would you consider Harvey Haddix for LHP? I might be biased because of his 12-inning perfect game vs the Braves, though.

How about Manny Sanguillen in for Smokey since Burgess only played for the Pirates about 4 or 5 years? I don't mean to start anything ... just offering an opinion. Your list is a good one.

Haddix could well have been on my list, but I already had so many 1960 Pirates, I thought I should mix in a couple of others and I was a big Candeleria fan. I loved Sangy, but Smokey was, again, a fond memory from my youth, so he was my choice. In 1960 I was baseball 24/7, so that has greatly colored my selections.

Hell of a lineup and you could of put Clemens in there for your RHP and no doubt Rivera as your relief pitcher.

Man those lineups for the Red Sox and Yankees - impressive. No doubt those 20+ years of futility in Pittsburgh hurt. A Reds team would be impressive and loaded with HOFers.

Typical of me ... I forgot something: relief pitcher. Thanks, John. Rivera would have to be the guy. I thought about Clemens, but he is more a Red Sox than a Yankee to me.

Since you are well aware of the older Bucs, I'll ask you: What position did Frank Thomas Play? I remember him hitting a good few homers but forget his position. Not easy to remember due to lack of seeing them on tv back then. Mostly had to follow them on the radio. Thanks

Your lineup for the Pirates is pretty good but no way do I put Liriano over John Candelaria. I don't have a breakdown of the games played at each position, but I believe that Willie Stargell played more games in left field. When people think of Willie they only remember the bat, but he had a cannon for an arm. If you get a chance, watch the hi light film of the 1971 World Series. He makes a throw in game two that rivals anything that Clemente ever did. Steve Blass has said that Willie may have actually had a stronger arm than Clemente. He was just not as consistent. With all that said, I absolutely agree with your decision to put Willie at first base. Barry Bonds has to be the left fielder.

When he was with the Bucs I was in grade school but I remember him as a 3rd baseman and left fielder. I think he played some 1st base too.

An all time Yankee team w/o Ruth, Gherig, Dimaggio, Rivera?

Call me crazy but when Aaron Rowand ran full steam into the center field wall at Citzen's Bank Park literally breaking his face, he became one of those players I'd take on any team I would pick. Loved the way he played the game all out. I was right was in the stands that night and can still remember him cupping his hands to try to catch the blood from his face/nose as he headed towards the dugout. May not have been the greatest player of all time, but give a ton of respect to effort and giving it your all.

An all time Yankee team w/o Ruth, Gherig, Dimaggio, Rivera?

I am guessing that you missed the OP's criterion: ". What I’m looking for is what would be your all-time team for your favorite team in YOUR lifetime as a fan."

I admit I'm old, but not of the era of Ruth, Gherig, or Joe D. And I already agreed earlier that I forgot the relief pitcher.

Twins

C - Joe Mauer
1B -- Kent Hrbek
2B -- Chuck Knoblauch
SS -- Greg Gagne
3B -- Gary Gaetti
OF -- Kirby Puckett
OF -- Torii Hunter
OF -- Dan Gladden
DH -- Justin Morneau
SP -- Johan Santana
RP -- Rick Aguilera
MGR -- Tom Kelly (amazing that this team has had just 3 managers in my almost 30 years of being a fan)

My Pirates list has to go in reverse order (9-8-7-etc) because it has to start with The Great One:

RF - Roberto Clemente
CF - Andrew McCutchen
LF - Ralph Kiner (he was before my time, but I can't bring myself to put someone there who could not throw Sid Bream out at home!)
SS - Jay Bell
3B - Bobby Bonilla
2B - Bill Mazeroski
1B - Willie Stargell
C - Jason Kendall (by a hair over Manny Sanguillen)
RHP - Doug Drabek
LHP - John Candalaria
RP - Kent Tekulve

Favorite players/team are any of the NY Yankee squads of the late '50s and early '60s. But probably the best overall team in MLB history: 1927 NY Yankees. More members of Hall of Fame on that team than Carter has liver pills.

C- Johnny Bench
1B-Joey Votto
2B-Joe Morgan
SS-Barry Larkin
3B-Pete Rose
LF-George Foster
CF-Eric Davis
RF-Ken Griffey Sr.
SP-Tom Seaver
RP-Aroldis Chapman

This would be a formidable team. Your left-handed starter? Don Gullett? Votto over Tony Perez?

I agree with Hagberg, gotta start with the MAN...

RF - Roberto Clemente
CF - Andrew McCutchen
LF - (pre-drug) Barry Bonds
SS - Dick Groat
3B - Bobby Bonilla (over Don Hoak)
2B - Bill Mazeroski
1B - Willie Stargell
C - Smokey Burgess
RHP - Vernon Law
LHP - John Candalaria
RP - Elroy Face
PH (pinch hitter) - Jerry Lynch

Not a whole lot to choose from for Reds left handed starters really. If it was a one season thing, Danhy Jackosn is the choice. I guess Gullett, though his career started before My lifetime began. Perez was definitely clutch, but Votto tough to top. I'm not sure exactly where you would put him in that lineup, but it would be fun to get to see him play with some talent.

Boy, that is a tough one. The only ones that come to my mind are Joe Nuxhall (might be spelled incorrectly) and Jim O'Toole.
