To say that there was pedophile ring in the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese is an understatement of vast proportions. Three friars have been charged with letting a known pedophile, who had a past history of abuse, become an athletic trainer at Bishop McCort. He committed suicide after being charged. So far over 100 former students have come forward and were paid. Now more are coming forward. The AG report 3 weeks ago used confidential Diocese records they seized with a subpoena. It listed almost 50 priests and the crimes they committed on 140 children. These reports had interviews and notes from the meetings with families and the priests who admitted to many of the accusations. A hotline was set up after that was released and 225 people, some in there 60's and 70's, have called and it hasn't stopped. That is close to 500 children, god knows where it stops. Like Boston, and everywhere else, they moved these cretins from church to church. The AG reported District Attorneys in both Blair and Cambria Counties sat on evidence and didn't pursue cases after meeting with church officials. Two of those D.A's are now judges. One priest, Father Saylor, the police and fire feared because of his influence in local government. In the report, he said he picked the chiefs of police, the fire chiefs even the mayors. This is just beginning and its unbelievable as to its scope and the utter contempt the Church hierarchy had for children and the law. They operated as they were above the law and these communities were their fiefdoms. The tide is turning. The Catholic Conference of Pennsylvania and the Insurance lobby have successfully bottled up statute of limitation legislation in Harrisburg. The pressure is building and it will change. It has to!!
