Why does PSU refuse to return a kick-off?

Unless a spark is needed, I would order a fair catch if ball doesn’t make it to the end zone. Most of the time a guy does try to return the kick they end up far short of the 25. If there is a penalty you are usually inside the 10.
Noone ever talks about the illegal block or other penalties that normally happen, great point. The main reason is that most teams 'coffin corner' the kick like Urban started and thus have a significant advantage in narrowing the return lanes.

Yep, tried to return one today and lost the gamble. That's why... Also, higher likelihood of Injuries on kick returns
Tennessee just ran one back to the 35 and Kentucky had a penalty so even better field position. Thought Lorig would have some coaching.

I know T Frank surmised it has to do with depth at RB as Franklin likes to use a back-up RB to return kicks. Since there have been injuries, not taking a chance of injury. But would think PSU could have a speedster back-up to run them back.

It has to be someone with lock solid ball security. Nothing turns a game like fumbling a kickoff on your own 20

Well, considering Franklin is an excellent recruiter, hard to believe can't find someone who can catch and run a kickoff without fumbling.

Haven't seen an attempted return in quite some time.

Most teams don't these days. I think the stats show that any kick-off fielded inside the 5-yard line is more likely to be returned short of the 25...or even the 20...if the returner opts to run it out.

Plus there's the risk of a penalty or fumble. The smart play is to fair-catch and start the offense at the 25.

At this point there really is no reason to even have the kickoff…just give the opposing team the ball in the 25.

Why pay a coach to handle special teams when have the time they are doing anything but catching the ball. It’s a part of the game. Compete! Use more than lumbering backup RBs on kickoffs. Put Holmes and or M. Wilson back there! Let Dotson run on punts. I’m still waiting for him to break a punt and was so expectant of the return game this year.

You ruin the narrative that it’s poor coaching when you say that.
Yeah this board has quickly become the anti-JF board, may have to rethink staying. We all know JF is not great with clock management and some other things but at least on the other site there are rational people when it comes to the subject and can see the forest through the trees.

He did that and Saquon took it to the house.
