I get the fact that both semi-final games had to be played on Jan 1. But why does the final have to be played on a Monday? Why not this Wednesday? Bama had basically a bus ride back to campus after its Clemson win. Georgia had to fly across the entire country. Bama actually was on the field practicing on Tuesday, Georgia watched game tape at 5pm because they didnt get in till 4am that morning. I think this favors Bama. Why not give both teams a full week to prepare? It's not like classes have started at either school, and even if they had, we aren't talking Harvard vs. Yale here...

Saban complained the turnaround time after the semi’s is too short. Boo hoo.

Just hazarding a few guesses

1. They want a week after the semi finals to play the final.
2. No MNF to contend with.
3. Guessing the NCAA sets a limit on how long football seasons make an effort to keep football a one semester sport.
4. The locations and dates are determined years in advance for the semi and final game.

Beyond that - no idea or guessing.

I realize it's playoff time in the NFL, but this game should be on a Saturday. NFL should just use the Sunday schedule on Saturday, and leave the evening open for CFB.
I would think ratings would jump significantly on a Saturday evening game also.

NFL has always trumped college for TV purposes

I'll watch the first half. I hate it when a team that I follow is on late, let alone two teams I don't care about. I'll see the score tomorrow morning and any relevant highlights (on FS1, not ESPN).

The last postseason game can't go past the 2nd Monday in January. I'm guessing that rule is there to accommodate the playoffs, not the playoffs finishing on that date because of the rules

If I recall correctly, the last several championship games have been on Monday, no?

Both the CFP and the NCAA Basketball National Championships are on Mondays ... with the NCAA MBB title on Monday for a long time now (honestly I can't remember it not being on a Monday) ... not sure why anyone thinks the ratings would be any lower because its on that day rather than a Saturday.

No MNF = no competition for ratings. $$$$, $$$$, $$$$ is always the answer with the NCAA, but it's about education and the kids first. You have to admit it almost sounds cute to say it's about the kids and education anymore.

Every NCAA Football and Basketball championship is played on a monday. Im sure monday night is much better ratings than saturday. There are a lot fewer conflicts for people on a monday after work than there are on a saturday night.

Because this is when the fight they believe they can win is being held.

If I was a betting, man, my money would be on 'Bama. I think that GA win was just too emotionally draining. On top of that, 'Bama has a chip on their shoulder.

A better idea is to have a 16 team National Championship playoff and play the championship game at 4pm the week before the Super Bowl. It would rival the Super Bowl in national attention.

Does anyone really care about tonight? Just seems like another big SEC game in late October! Too bad, too, because it’s been a great year. Bama should not be in it. They received a bye just like O$U did a year ago. The playoff should be reserved for conference champions. No committee, no polls, just on field results. Also, please eliminate cupcake opponents in November! You get one charity game in September.

Yes. The two best teams got in.

I thought from the headline that you were saying why play since UCF is the national champion.

NCAA won't let the football season drag out that long.
You are probably right. This is surprising considering that they could potentially make hundreds of millions of dollars in TV revenue. I can't believe they care about the well being of the "student athletes". There must be an ulterior motive.

You make some valid points but remember the bowl schedule was set up months before anybody knew who would be in it. It could have been Alabama making the cross country flight while Georgia stayed home, literally.

NCAA is irrelevant. Th CFP boys just need to have Bill Handoncock (give the man something to do for all they're paying him) call the NCAA to have them change the rule.

Anyone thinking the NFL would adjust their tv schedule to accommodate CFB is dilusional!

Mon to Mon is absolutely no different than Sat to Sat during the season.

PLUS they’ve played one game in the last 5+ weeks PLUS there are no classes.

Saban bitching about it went over like a lead balloon.....he got shot down everywhere I saw or read about it.

That would make things tougher for us since we'd have to find an open date in each of the next four Septembers to move the Rutgers game.

I figured you would be in the know.

There's really nothing to know. When it comes to anything significant to major college football, the NCAA is nothing more than a shadow of a fig leaf. What the P5 want, the P5 get. If the rest of the membership tries to flex muscle on anything important, it's "hasta la vista, shitheads."

as someone else posted, it seems having the game on Sunday the week before the Super Bowl would make a lot of sense. I get NCAA is limiting the length of the season, but if hoops can last 5+ months, why not football.

I believe the Georgia fans are a little too dogmatic about their chances to win, while ignoring the elephant in the room.

It is a full week... not any different than a Saturday game followed by a Saturday game.
