Why so much love for Wash (Huskies)?

I actually like Chris Peterson, not so much Washington, and remember the days when he was actually rumored for the HC at PSU... so no hate here. I feel like they're a poor man's USC with players from the islands/etc, so why so much love for the Huskies every year regarding rankings? Just curious to hear thoughts...
