Will we see a genuine QB competition or a CJF token competition in name only?

I say that if Jimmy doesn't conduct a honest open QB competition he will be ran out of town. Let me say this also at the beginning I was very excited and supportive. This is no longer the case primarily due to James bilking the dollars out of PSU every damn year. He sold himself as the next Loyal committed Coach. He is only loyal to money.

And who the hell is going to “run him out of town”? As my late father used to say who died and made you boss? How do you conclude that he didn’t conduct an open QB competition the past several years. Despite his issues, Clifford is better than Stevens and Levis IMO. I hope Allar is all that and a bag of chips, but it is a big jump from high school to college especially at QB. The man offensive problems were the lousy offensive line and poor play by the running backs and tight ends.

Whatever, the word is out there that Cliff is inaccurate and wilts under pressure. Did you watch the Outback Bowl? Do you want to see more of that next season?

The fans through their dollars can do this. I have not concluded that he has done that, but the question was about this upcoming QB decision with the young bucks competing. I am not the boss and haven't claimed so. Just my opinion. I hoping that these young guys live up to the billing/propaganda.

Clifford is not coming back to be a tutor. It will be Clifford, CV, and the two freshmen though the winter. We’ll see in the spring. But don’t expect a freshman to start at Purdue unless Cliff is hurt. The three young guns will battle all year for the backup spot and Jimmy Franks better get them game experience.

Well said. Clifford will be the starting QB next year unless he throws away the job in actual games. Clifford returned under the impression he was going to start. Otherwise he'd be in the draft or the portal. Let's be real

Something that's not being mentioned here:

If Clifford is the starter and is not effective, a QB controversy will erupt quickly and the pressure will be on Coach Franklin big-time. How willing will he be to support an ineffective 4th year QB starter when he has a prize freshman in the bullpen?

Coach doesn't have much good will to spare after the last 2 seasons.

To Clifford’s credit, he gave himself a major demerit with his bowl appearance.

If he is named the starter come Fall, we’ll know with certainty that Chrome Dome is calling all of the shots ….hence the piss poor performance.

So, one can already see the conclusion here. If Allar is not the starting QB, an open competition did not occur, The irony is dripping...

My fear is Groundhog Day. PSU wins in close games in the first third of the schedule with Clifford throwing balls at the ground or way beyond the reach of wide open receivers. 3 or 4 drive stoppers and misses 17 or so points in the first half. This keeps the games close and Clifford starts the second half of all early games. Thus, the rest of the QB room gets no experience for the rest of the season. I am not lobbying for anyone in particular to be the starter just for Clifford to be held to a simple criteria, if he starts, and that is to stay focused for the first half so others get so in game playing time.

There will be no competition this is already a given he should have seen the door 2 seasons ago but is best buds with Sandy

Better question - if Clifford is named the starting QB, will anyone on this board believe he's the best option to start the season even if he actually is?

Not so sure about that. This year, Levis had a higher QB rating (149.4 to 137.8), higher completion percentage (66.5 to 62.4), more touchdown passes (23 to 20), more rushing yards (487 to 293), more rushing touchdowns (9 to 2). The only place statistically Clifford was better was yards (2912 to 2593) and interceptions (6 to 12). Levis led a 10-3 team while Clifford led a 7-6 team.

If he stops the mental lapses and it shows on the field of play... I won't question it.

Did you watch any of Kentucky’s games? In the few I saw their offense featured the run game with Levis basically being a game manager.

Clifford threw 396 passes and Levis threw 325. PSU ran the ball 318 times and UK ran the ball 333. Both teams seem pretty even from the stand point of run-pass. I didn't include the 87 rushing attempts by SC or the 92 by WL.

Been that way with some fans for the almost 60 years I have been a Penn State fan. Why change now?
And on the games I saw the announcers all were very impressed with very quick release. He has a rocket of an arm and was accurate on deep throws. Also ran like a tank which everyone knows he can do.

He had a couple games in which he passed a lot. Most games they dominated on the ground and K had a solid D that kept games low scoring.

Under our previous OCs and the RPO type we ran, Levi’s didn’t fit in. He is not that type of QB but more a drop back passer that does well on straight ahead run plays. If he were here with the Yurcich system he would have been better than. Clifford, IMO. Our current offense fits him far better.

The problem is the offensive line, not Sean Clifford, not Christian Veilloux, not Drew Allar, and not Beau Pribula

Hard to tell who was better. Levis had a better Oline. When I watched the two play this year, they looked like clones. Both made stupid mistakes and bad decisions that a veteran QB shouldn't make.
