Women’s Wrestling

Yup. And the PIAA is definitely dragging its heels, but that’s not surprising.

PSU is not dragging its heels, here, but it should lead given how good the women’s sports program is, the importance of wrestling in the state. And I’d love to see our coal cracker girls kick the crap out of Ohio girls.

Completely agree. Why not at Penn State.... it’s becoming a wrestling Mecca! Come on Sandy, do something for a change. Be a leader.

Are you willing to support it? Are you willing to endow the program? The athletic department already has far to many sports ti support. Unless someone is willing to drop a hockey like donation to fund the sport then they shouldn't add the sport. Let be honest once the novelty wears off I imagine most of the posters on here calling for it will completely ignore it and it will become another money pit for the athletic department.

This might be the most unnecessary arrogant posts I've seen on this board yet. As if you've endowed any programs. Why even post this garbage. Shut up.

What is arrogant about saying Penn State should be fiscally responsible before adding sports? People love to say they should add this sport or that sport then turn around and complain when Penn State raises prices. Are they willing to donate their money for it no matter how small or large to fund it? People complain non stop about STEP but how do you think they pay for sports that lose money? I am just tired of escalating costs. They should be removing sports and not adding them. If they had a plan to fully fund women's wrestling then I would support it. The sport has minuscule participation with only 14,587 girls wrestling nationwide.

Last time I looked the PSU athletic department was running in the black and so is self supporting so your point has no merit. As to escalating costs people tend to complain about a lot of things, just look at your posts as proof. Plus, it does not help your position to post out of date statistics. Per NFHS (see link) there were 16,562 HS girls participating in HS wrestlers for the 2017-18 school year, a 13.5% increase over the number you quoted and more states are sanctioning girls HS wrestling every year so that number will continue to increase significantly. If YOU don't want to support women's wrestling that is fine. That is your right. Also your right to complain here. Also, my right to disagree with your uneducated opinion.

Will it remain in the black if you continue to add sports? Most of the sports Penn State currently has are not properly supported. Many have outdated facilities. Why add another mouth to feed? 16,562 is still minuscule. That is less than half a percent of the over 3.5 million girls participating in girls high school athletics.

If you got a 13.5% increase in a stock.....you would be shouting its potential from the rooftops. But here....when it comes to women's wrestling.....it is a horrible investment in your view. Not sure the math or basic common sense and fairness agrees with your negative analysis.

Yours is just an unpopular position. Some of the points have merit, delivery is the problem, imo. Anything done by the Athletic Dept, in time, will be studied from all angles.

I’ll donate the mud or jello, whichever discipline they prefer;). Just kidding; sorry, couldn’t resist.

Under Title IX, If they add another women’s sport sport, would they have to eliminate one women’s sport or add another men’s sport???

MN is having the same talks. It's time to extend from "We need to support women's wrestling because it will only help men's wrestling" to "We need to support women's wrestling because these humans &$*#ing scrap, too".
augsburg is adding women's wrestling correct? they are going to have a really good team. psu could add women's wrestling. i don't think they would have a problem gettting the financial support.

I am very much for penn state picking up women’s wrestling, and I believe Penn State would be the flagship and put women’s college wrestling onto another level. I would also expect Psu to make a splash with the coaching selection with an Adeline, or Helen type hire to coach

Before we add women’s wrestling, I’d be happier to see both the men and women soccer players not have to pee in an outhouse and not have halftime meetings in a bus.

sources for this thanks
Don’t care the source, said I’d rather see it. To that end, if people want Sandy to set the Development officers on a funding hunt to set a trend with women’s wrestling, I’m saying set the development officers on a funding hunt to put locker rooms in the stadium of a Perennial Big Ten Champion team and National Champion. Forget setting a trend, take that facility out of the ice age (other than the carpet it’s played on). Be good at what you have, move on to the next.

As a recent attendee of psu soccer games and clinics......I agree that the facilities s*ck

Psu has the money and its ridiculous that it's not better . ...let a lone the quality on the field which demands it really.

Plans are already in place, although no time line is mentioned. See link.

It's bigger than just Jeffrey Field, and "having the money" changes in the big picture context of 23 facilities that are part of the 20-year facility plan. That said, the soccer facility (Jeffrey Field) is one that's prioritized (as dunk says, the facilities stink) and placed on the 5-year plan, to be done by 2022.

Football stadium upgrade is separate, I believe, and earlier in 2019 was announced as a $69 million adventure, not yet completely funded. With football donors (some) having deep pockets, I'm sure much of that funding will be from private donations.

FYI. It was on the plan in 2009-2010..... wake me when they do it. Ridiculous to wait any longer.
