Women's BB in the NIT (big stuff!)

still better then the men's.. Absolutely hilarious that people that continue to take shots at her, stand by Chambers who has done nothing in 6 years. Washington resume outshines his big time, wait I get it, he had less to work with.

hilarious the "people" that make assumptions about other "people".....

Washington inherited a perennial top 20 team that had some issues due to the exit of the previous coach, and swiftly took it into the land of mediocrity.... a few seasons making the NCAA, but also reaching dark year status with a 6-24 record in 2014-2015.

Chambers, on the other hand, inherited a team and program that was a perennial also ran - a mediocre team that was consistently outside looking in among the power 5 conference basketball programs. And he has done nothing to change that, looking purely at results (won lost records).

Chambers HAS recently brought more talent into the men's program than has been the case in 50+ years. Whereas Washington has had some recruiting successes, but has miss-managed her roster and generally failed to develop and coach the talent she has gotten into disciplined, achieving basketball teams. If this year's Lady Lions team is indicative of her program peaking, making the NIT, that is a sad reflection of the PSU women's BB program in relation to where the previous women's BB coach had the program (which included an NCAA final 4 appearance).
Rene Portland served 27 seasons as the Lady Lions head coach. She won over 600 games at Penn State, making her sixth in most wins in Division I women’s basketball.

As much as I believe Chambers is nearing the end of his grace period, the time he should get to prove himself the man that can take PSU men's basketball to a level fans have not seen in the past, Washington is many years past that point and should have been given the door years ago.........after the disastrous 2014-15 season.

Washington built WBB up from two bad seasons at the end of the Portland era to the point where Coquese won or shared three consecutive B1G Coach-of-the-Year awards. Then two really lousy seasons followed by the current 19-10 season and a WNIT bid in this, her 10th year. So she deserves credit for rebuilding the program and discredit for letting it collapse. I perceive that she's a better recruiter than a bench coach.

I doubt Barbour will pull the trigger after a winning season, but if I was Coquese, I'd be looking around at other opportunities, a la Ed DeChellis.

I found it interesting that MSU made it with the same conference record--and IU did not, with a better conference record.... Still, IU and PSU both lost to MSU (even though MSU lost to Rutgers) and MSU went to the championship game.

Conference record is one input, but I believe head to head and late season play are considered more highly by the selection committee..... so beating IU and doing well in the B10 tourney must be what got MSU in.

Two big thumbs up for Coquese though, for never instructing a defender to turn around and sprint toward her own basket, up one point with under ten seconds to go in the game.

She's got a lead on Chambers in that respect.

Makes sense to me. Too bad the football guys didn't work that way....

The record was probably not as good as it looks. The out of conference schedule was not very difficult, although they did beat Tennessee. The Big 10 is usually not that strong of a conference, and it was down a bit more from previous years which is reflected in getting only 4 NCAA tournament teams. Nebraska, Rutgers and Minnesota all had bad years from where they were the last several seasons. I think Penn State only had two wins against tournament teams - Tennessee and Purdue (split the two games with them). I really do not think they were close to a tournament bid - Michigan and Indiana were likely in front of them.

Handed a perennial top 20 team? Did you miss the part where the program was a train wreck because of having a bigoted head coach? What fantasyland do you live in? The wheels fell off the program when instead of firing her for discrimination they let her coach while the program collapsed. But for some reason in your world that never happened.

What fantasyland do YOU live in? Everyone knows how Rene went out. But the point stands that she coached a perennial top 20 team for the vast majority of her tenure at PSU. And Washington had the opportunity to build her team based upon the very good fan support that was generated by the Rene's success. AND that Washington has failed to do that.

Focus on the last two seasons and what transpired. Washington had to start over, Deal with reality. She had a few bad years but she's but she's improved each of the last two. She should make the NCAAs next year, like Chambers, or her seat will get hot.

Yes but the program and roster was decimated by the bigot coach. That like saying Franklin was given a top 20 program. You completely ignore what happened previously. So even thought she had success it was not in the position to win from day one. After rebuilding the roster in three years Washington was able to make 4 straight tournaments and win 3 straight B1G titles. That something that Portland never did.

Deal with reality. Washington is in her 10th season. She has had the chance to start over 5 times and still hasn't built any stability in the PSU woman's BB team. Quoting her record of improvement from a 6 win SEASON that should have gotten any power 5 coach fired is ridiculous.

You're not even making sense
This does not make sense?

Washington is in her 10th season. This is Washington's 10th season. She took over as PSU head coach for the 2007-08 season.

She has had the chance to start over 5 times and still hasn't built any stability in the PSU woman's BB team.
She has recruited 10 classes into her program. Very good incoming players can make an impact immediately in BB, but many of her recruits have washed out, not impacted the program, not improved under coach Washington's development and coaching oversight, leading to the erratic records of her teams. Her roster has turned over a number of times in the process. It is common for good coaches to take 2 years to turn over their rosters and turn teams around. In 10 years she has had many opportunities to change her roster and produce more consistent on the court performance, but her record indicates that is not the case.
Year/coach/overall record/ league record/league standing
2007–08 Coquese Washington 13–18 4–14 10th
2008–09 Coquese Washington 11–18 6–12 7th
2009–10 Coquese Washington 17–14 8–10 6th WNIT First Round

2012–13 Coquese Washington 26–6 14–2 1st NCAA Second Round
2013–14 Coquese Washington 24–8 13–3 1st NCAA Sweet Sixteen
2014–15 Coquese Washington 6–24 3–15 13th
2015–16 Coquese Washington 12–19 6–12 11th

Quoting her record of improvement from a 6 win SEASON that should have gotten any power 5 coach fired is ridiculous.
Her 2014-15 team won 6 games, total. I disagree with giving her much credit for "improvement" from that record, as that abysmal performance should have resulted in a coaching change, and would be pretty hard to be that bad on a consistent basis....... Making the NIT 2 years removed from a 6 win season is "improvement", but does not get the program back to being a consistent NCAA tournament team, which it was for a very long stretch before Washington took over the program.
