Would loved to have seen the competition

I had no voice for hours after that dual. Great memories!

That was the match in my mind. Huge upset.

In the competition between Cassar and Shak, did Shak beat him in the wresting room? Sanderson went with Shak for the tournament that year. I remember being a bit surprised with this match weighing on my mind.

Huge upset at the time,in hindsight, not so huge.
I can think of at least 4 guys who knew he was capable of pulling that off.

I see what you're saying. The very next year the kid was an NCAA champion. I didn't see it coming. Would have loved to seen him square off with the kid from MN again.....

Still don't get why he didn't get the nod for the tournament though.

Me either, Shak sure has a spot in coaches hearts.

(1) Shak won the wrestle off
(2) Look at their records that year including strength of schedule
(3) Look at their bonus rates

Also if we're going to apply hindsight to 2nd guess the decision, then we should also in hindsight acknowledge Cassar's struggles to make 197, including his decision that year to go HWT the next year.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize Shak beat Cassar in the wrestle off.

It's certainly presented as hindsight now, but back when Cassar beat Moore, it really wasn't. It was a data point, and an impressive one. Given the fact that he lost the wrestle off and had trouble making weight makes all the sense in the world.
