wow, northwestern with 3 forfeits

in a loss to SIUE

Seems like a bit of a down year for the Big Ten with Northwestern, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan all struggling. Northwestern in particular has just imploded.

As much as I enjoy watching PSU laying waste to opponents, having only 4 or 5 dominant teams nationally isn't good for the sport. NU and UofM were supposed to be part of the 2nd tier of teams who could make some noise in March (perhaps Michigan still can).

Really bad luck this year for the Wildcats. They only have 20 on their roster, and Sebastian is out for the year (injury), and maybe Brill too.

Jefe, even if Laux was still on the roster, he'd be ineligible this year anyway. Same reason Jered Cortez isn't presently your 133-pounder.

True, and I wrote that sloppily. It's not a given that Laux would've won the spot this year even if eligible.

This year it's more about how they have so few practice partners to work out with, and how each injury makes practice more of a challenge. Long-term, it's about their ability to attract and retain talent.

Just curious as to reasoning why they are capped at 20....
Insiders like SHP can confirm this, but I don't think NW is capped.

Except of course by economics of the market and opportunity cost. NW tuition is $16.2k/quarter -- or $48.6/year not including summers. Plus Chicago is a very expensive place to live. Not gonna find a lot of guys willing to walk on or accept book money.

For comparison: a nonresident at Penn State pays $31.3k/year in tuition and fees. So the break-even point is a 36% scholarship at NW -- i.e., a 1/3 ride at NW still costs more out-of-pocket than a nonresident walking on at PSU.

Plus, Pariano had complained publicly about a lack of university support for the program. If the facilities and travel arrangements are subpar, those are more good reasons to not wrestle there.

Northwestern has had a skinny roster for a couple years now...what was it, 18 last year? It's 20 this year, as I stated before, and 11 of those are FR or RSFR. Not sure where the "cap of 20" question came from, I don't believe that's the case at all.

"Cap of 20" was an over-interpretation of their roster size.

Whatever the reasons the fact that a Big Ten team has a roster of 20 and they are redshirting the 8 true freshman is mind boggling. That is a roster of 12. They have had some injuries so the margin of error (if their was any) to put out a full team is almost zero. It is like our situation at heavyweight (only having Nick at the start of the season) times 10.

I believe the resident tuition is @ 30k and the non resident tuition is @ 48k at PSU. I hope I am wrong because we live in NJ and my daughter was just accepted to PSU University Park! Lol!

The figures I listed above are directly from each school's website. For PSU, I assumed freshman in engineering (Engr has the highest fees).

You're wrong; hit the link below.

Those numbers are for tuition only (do not include room, board, books, etc.), so it's still not exactly cheap, but not nearly as bad as what you recall.
