The owner, art modell, hated the name and colors. He screwed over Paul Brown who eventually was given the bengals franchise. He also didn’t like that there was no good logo for a “brown”. He was happy to give it up.

I believe the colts left because of blue laws prohibiting the selling of beer on Sundays before a certain time and the NFL moving to the 1 & 4 time slots to accommodate TV. The colts would play most home games at 1 and lose beer revenue. Perhaps there is poetic justice in there somewhere
