I've been a big PSU fan since the 70's when I went to me first football game. Mostly followed football all these years, but I do follow all our teams and watch as much as I can on BTN. This wrestling season I watched as much as I could and have really gotten into this sport. My question is what is there to look forward to in the off season? Do our kids wrestle in any tournaments in summer or fall? I've seen references to these high school elite tournaments. When do those take place? I really want to get more into following this sport year round, and any information on how to do this would be appreciated.

Offhand...

Pgh Wrestling Classic (fka Dapper Dan) -- PA vs. USA, this weekend. Hall vs. Pitt commit Austin Bell at 170.

US Olympic trials - Nico and Zain both qualified, Manville qualified for Greco, a number of NLWC guys will go. (Maybe Hall too.)

Fargo -- biggest HS freestyle/Greco tourney in the country.

Disney Duals -- national HS duals tourney for club teams such as Young Guns.

There will be other international freestyle tourneys, but Rio will be the big one.

Well, coming up this weekend (March 26) is the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic, formerly known as Dapper Dan.

Closer to home, on April 22-23 Flo is putting on Pinning Down Autism at my alma mater Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. As I understand it, the format is all-star teams (lineups tbd) from 8 states competing in a dual meet tournament. In the heart of Lehigh Valley, this should be a good one. The gym at Muhlenberg is great - big enough for the event and the bleachers are really steep, so you have awesome views of the action.

Well, the competition is not as regular, and most is only available on pay-per-view, but there are some things to look forward to. I don't have time to generate an exhaustive list. Here are a few highlights:

High School

FloNationals - held March 24-26, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania
has become one of the top competitions in the country. being out of season, so to speak, it allows for a lot of great competitors from all over the country. If I didn't have other commitments, I'd be in attendance at this. A large percentage of the NCAA finalists were former FloNationals champions or finalists.

Fargo -- that's the name for short, as it's held in Fargo, ND. I believe the official name is ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships. It takes place July 16-23. Like FloNationals, most of the NCAA Champions or finalists were former winners/high placers at Fargo

USA Wrestling/ASICS Post-Season Nationals -- that takes place this coming weekend in Las Vegas. It's for kids in 1st grade thru 12th grade. FloNationals seems to have surpassed it, but it's a good competition

Disney Duals -- that's what most call it, though it's technically the AAU Wrestling Scholastic Duals. Many of the top high school prospects will be in competition. It takes place June 12-17 at Walt Disney World, in Florida

Pre-College
Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic -- the former Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic. It pits a team of top PA seniors against top seniors from across the county. Mark Hall will be wrestling for the USA All-Stars. No other PSU verbals are in the competition, but a number of guys that PSU recruited, or will be facing in the coming years, will be in the competition. It takes place at Fitzgerald Field House (Pitt) this coming Saturday (March 26).

Olympic/International

US Olympic Trials - Greco, and Freestyle. Takes place April 8-10 at Iowa City, IA. A few high schoolers will be in the competition, and a number of college guys will be in the competitions, as well as quite a few former college stars

Junior National Championshps -- Freestyle and Greco. This is where some of the elite high schoolers (Spencer Lee) and some of the better younger college guys will be in competition. This takes place April 27-30 in Las Vegas, NV

Cadet Open -- believe this is where the US Cadet team is picked as well, and that's elite high schoolers. It also takes place April 27-30 in Las Vegas, NV

The U.S. has only qualified 4 of the 6 weights in freestyle for the Olympics (57kg, 74kg, 97kg, 125kg). The two tournaments left to get the last couple weights qualified (65kg and 86kg) are in Mongolia on April 22-24 and in Turkey on May 6-8. Not entirely sure of the format for those two tournaments, but the Pan Am Oly Qualifier was a blind draw with only the two finalists earning a qualifying spot for their nation and no true 2nd match.

Also the event that selects the Cadet World Team is UWW Cadet Nationals, which is held in Akron, OH and is in June this year I believe.

Junior World Team Trials are at the end of May.

I think Mark Hall, Mason Manville, Nick Suriano, and Nick Lee each has at least one year of juniors left (they all competed in the 2014 cadet world team trials).

University Nationals are the first weekend in June. Anyone on the current team could end up there (though seems like PSU was lightly represented last year ... I remember Cody Law being there, but I'm pretty sure there were not a lot of others).

On it as usual jefe. Solid info.

FYI last year there wasn't a University World tournament, so that may have led to less guys entering the field. I believe this is a year where there is a University World tournament, so I expect a few more college guys, and even a few of the younger-lesser tier senior level guys taking a crack at it as well.

How's the Disney Duals for spectators? I may just run up there for a day or 2 this summer to watch some action. Can be inside in less than 2 hours from my house.
