Preseason I felt IF our D could finish in the Top 15 or 20, we stood a chance to - go-all-the-way!
Darn if we didnt.
Total D ( ppg): #1 Bama #2 WI #7 PSU #14 MICH #23 MSU
Total D ( yards): #1 WI #4 MI #9 OSU #10 MSU #28 PSU.
#7 scoring defense says what could have been. But it wasnt meant to be, this year. We were just a tad too young along the OL/DL. But one helluva try. And Id say our coaches did a fine job overall, too. 2017 seemed to be a step in the right direction, setting the stage for another 10+ W year in 2018. One year at a time, folks.
Offensively:
Total O ( ypg): OSU #5 @ 43.8 ppg & PSU #7 @ 41.6 ppg.
Our quick score O left just a tad too much time on the clock for the other guys.
QB passing yards: Darnold #12, McS #18, TLee #21, Thorson #30, JT #38.
( TLee surprised us in the Nebr game but his stats were top drawer.)
Rushing Yards/g: #3 Taylor WI, #26 Dobbins OSU, #31 Saquon
Scoring ppg: #6 Saquon
Kicking:
#97 T Davis PSU 9/16 fgs & 66-66 xpts. We scored to fast and often for him to have a repeat great year , but his KO job seemed t o mess up his concentration on fgs a bit. .
Punting: #1 = 48.4 yds per punt ( 65 punts) #57 was Gillikin at 43.2 ypp. Lots of good ones out there nowadays.
Summary: Our D held up their end of the deal. Our O didnt quite make the 45 ppg we were hoping for ( lack of consistant running game) Our STs made major progress over last year.
So we were THIS close! But a great job all around. Sure we could wish for a couple more breaks or big plays here and there, but the team was in the running, and statistically that is confirmed, IMO. So so close to perfection . But a great year nonetheless.
Darn if we didnt.
