Yes another food thread!: PIES! Best and where/how to buy?

Nothing beats my wife's homemade blackberry, but when I'm out and about, and I want a small pie at a good price, I buy one of these.

French Silk from Baker’s Square.

The Key Lime Pie (frozen) from Trader Joe’s is pretty darn good (once it is defrosted).

Peach crumb and fresh strawberry pie are my favorites, baked by your's truly.

In charge of dessert at our tailgate. Bake homemade pies. Lemon Meringue, Apple, Peach, Bourbon Pecan, Cherry-Raspberry, Blueberry, Pumpkin or Sweet Potato. Usually three-four for each tailgate. Bring Creamery(of course) Vanilla ice cream and make my own Bourbon or Rum-favored whip cream. My special pie around holidays is Pecan-Raspberry-Cranberry Pie from Southern Living. When in Hawaii made Macadamia Nut Pie instead of Pecan.

Nothing has ever compared to the great grandmother that I was fortunate enough to have until she was in her 90’s and my mid teens. Shoe-fly apple or pumpkin were the specialties but I never had one she expiremented with that was bad. And she was always a pusher. “Here have another slice. no isn’t an option”

Amish Oatmeal Pie
I have never heard of or tasted Amish oatmeal pie but it looks delicious. Apparently it is similar to pecan pie, but the Amish substituted oatmeal in lieu of pecans because they were expensive/in short supply.

It looks really good. I’m thinking about how to combine both oatmeal and pecans into a pie such that the oatmeal and pecans are suspended in the gelatinous body of the filling.

MtNittany, Have you ever tried the mango key lime pie from Publix? One of my favorites.

Pie making seems to be on the decrease, at least in my circles. My grandmother made tons of pies. My mother made more cakes than pies. My wife only makes shoe fly. I doubt my 20 something nieces have every made a pe

I’m not a big dessert pie guy. I do like chocolate pudding pie, but that certainly isn’t elaborate. My favorite would have to be homemade chicken pot pie.

Growing up on a farm there were days in the summer that my mother would give each of my siblings and myself a bowl and ask us to go pick raspberries. While our bowls normally came back half eaten, the pies she made from them were delicious. We also had apple, pear and peach trees where the routine was the same. The garden had strawberries and rhubarb and there's a half acres of blueberries. She made some of the best fruit pies anywhere and the best meals those days were just eating the fruit while mowing the grass outside.

As for somethign not my moms, the Blue Goose In Hancock MD on 68 has a great bakery. Fruits of the forest pie is my normal pick up on the way back home from PA.
