Zahir Mathis decommited from OSU and it appears PSU is in the driver’s seat for his commitment. I think the combination of Abdul Carter’s dominant season, PSU rising to #4 and on the verge of a playoff berth, as well Deion Barnes becoming a young rising star in the coaching circle got him to decommit. OSU is #2 and still a favorite to win the natty this year so I don’t see that OSU did or didn’t do anything. I haven’t seen anything that any other schools have been hot after him, so I’m assuming PSU is in the drivers seat at this point.

In situations like this, you always have to ask if it's a money issue.

Unfortunately, I think many of these recruits commit and decommit based on their NIL value to the school whether many want to admit it or not. Was OSU going cheap on the kid when compared to many of their other 4 and 5 star recruits? Is PSU willing to fork up money. Guess we'll never know but recruiting is nowhere near what it was 3 or 4 years ago. Just the way it is - like it or not

That's what I suspect. Regardless, if PSU could get him, I guess that would be a coup.

Yep, need to go get him if they're willing to fork out the NIL.

No. We need to keep Chaz Coleman who might have more upside.

PS. A B10 committed DE is visiting OSU this week per one of the pay boards. I cant tell who though.

Get them both. Top hs edge rushers... Some gain weight and become interior lm.. some stay edge rushers some become LBs some safeties. They are by in large long and quick.. get as many as you can.

I agree. The d-line is what mainly won UGA their National Championships in 2021 and 2022. Having a dominant d-line makes it so much easier to have great linebacking and d-back play.

This is the stuff that we don't see behind the scenes and maybe Mathis was not at all pleased with it. Maybe PSU is in the same boat. Do they have DEs that they might PO if they bring in Mathis? Recruiting is definitely complicated today especially with NIL now on the scene

My sense is he was not that coveted by OSU, maybe fell a little in their eyes over the past few months. Mathis sensed this or it was obvious through the NIL package he was getting or some combo of the two. Nevertheless, I would be happy to scoop him up if we are able to.

No. We still have a budget. We already have 5 DEs+ and at least one LB who other sites list as a DE.

Do you want another DE if it means one less WR or one less LB?

Did UGA over recruit the DL position or did they simply do a really good job and have similar numbers?

It also helps UGA that the state of Georgia has about 6 times as many 4 and 5 star ranked players as Pennsylvania. 2025 Pa has 8 on 247. Georgia has 47.

Those numbers perhaps put into perspective what a great job Franklin is doing with this program. Because of the demographic shift in this country, there really are only four programs in the Rust Belt that have any chance of competing for a championship on a regular basis, and they're PSU, OSU, Michigan and ND.

Thank God Voltz is not a coach. I'll stick with Mr Barnes!

I wish more people would realize that. James has also done an outstanding job of expanding PSU's recruiting foot print. After all the CFB game is all about talent aquasition. I my opinion NIL has actually made it more difficult for PSU. We continue to lose Hi end DL, DT in particular, WR to SEC/ACC schools who's budget is higher and who's roster building philosophy is different than ours.

We have a budget.... 😂 has that budget changed in the last 8 weeks? Tell me... Has OSUs budget changed in the last 8 weeks? Tell me all your insider knowledge regarding the current statuses of budgets, please. Franklin is doing a great job .... On all fronts except clock management. 😂

More of a criticism of recruiting gurus than reality

For one thing, they like warm weather

GA is the new FL. By the way, the Florida schools sucked last year and this (with the exception being this year's Miami)

I'll probably get blasted by a few Franklin haters on this board, but I've always considered him a top 6 or 7 CF coach in the country. Yes, I know, the OSU stuff, but PSU and Franklin always PLAYS OSU TOUGH every game and none are blowouts. It's like PSU is somewhat jinxed in that series

If you look at Florida's history, except for the 1960s and the Spurrier era, that program has been mostly mediocre, even in the late 1980s when they had Emmitt Smith.

Urban Meyer era they were the best in college football. Since he left they have been average.

Look at where the top Florida talent went and then look at the records of those teams compared to the schools in Florida.

I vote for an embarrassment of riches at DE. With the best going 3 and out, it's needed.

Aren't there reports that Mathis is having a less than average (for a top B10 team's recruit) senior season?

If that's the case I don't believe Franklin and Barnes will spend a scholarship on Mathis. Maybe they will convince him to come to PSU as a DT project as it's been said that he doesn't have the juice to be a top pass rushing DE.

Being reported that PSU will be involved but is certainly not the leader. Nor does it sound like we're pushing all that hard vs some other flip targets on the board.

Mathis seems to be looking for a pay day.

Some other sites are reporting the same info on Mathis

Unfortunately, sounds like this domino will only have a negative impact on PSU. OSU just offered OH native and recent DE PSU commit Chaz Coleman this AM - does not sound like he will remain committed.
