Emergency goalie David Ayres helps Hurricanes defeat Maple Leafs in NHL debut

dude works as a zamboni driver and practice team goalie for the Leafs' minor league team, he's 42 and had a kidney replacement 15 years ago, last played professionally in the highest division of men's senior hockey 5 years ago going 0-8 with an 8.9 goals against average

entered the game in minor league team's blue pants and their helmet but wearing a Hurricanes jersey, gave up goals on his first two shots faced but saved the next 8 to get the win (oldest goalie to win his NHL debut lol)

Amazing. Great story.

if you watch the videos of him going onto the ice, and then circling the ice to applause after the game and going into the Hurricanes' locker room after the game it is just a great scene, what a moment that had to be

Who drove the Zamboni, then?
funny on his wife's twitter someone asked that too and another person replied that it was also the shining moment for the emergency backup zamboni guy

but really he drives the zamboni for the minor league team not the Leafs

That was so cool. The article also said he was actually available to both teams, who ever needed him. Never knew there were standby emergency players in the NHL.

Further info -- he's actually the 3rd practice goalie for the Leafs so he's seen shot from the likes of Tavares, Matthews, Marner, et al before. So if there was ever a team that he was best suited to face, this was it...which explains why he was getting stick taps from Leafs players, including goalie Frederic Andersen, when the 2nd period ended. He's also a kidney transplant recipient (from his mother) back in 2004. Canes are selling #90 Ayres shirseys with the royalties going to a kidney foundation TBA in Canada.

We could have had saves Jim with the ice slowed by no Zamboni ! I didn’t click on the thread cause I figured it had to be small small time league . What a story. Just saw a video clip while watching PGA

Weird how he went against the team he always practices with. Said he knew the players' tendencies on how they shoot and where. Said first guy that shot didn't take his usual shot and thats why it went in.
