We have been visiting Delaware and the Delmarva peninsula for over 40 years and my son now lives about 8 miles SW of Rehoboth Beach. From our first visit, I noticed several cylindrical towers dotting the coastline. I figured what the purpose of these towers were and since we visit there yearly, I keep up on them. On one trip, my son took me to Cape Henlopen state park and we toured the area and tower mentioned in the article. There is a fee for non residents to get into the park and a beach for swimming and fishing. As you walk from the parking lot to the beach, you walk right past a gun placement as mentioned in the article. The actual gun is gone, but you can see where it sat. The hike to the top of the tower is good, hard cardio, but once you get to the top, the view is worth it.

When we went to Holden Beach (North Carolina) a few years ago, you would still find lumps of congealed oil as well as chunks of coal on the beaches from ships sunk by subs off that coast.

I remember when we visited the Two Lights State Park in Maine a few years ago that there was fortified gun placements left there.

They still have the clam shack on the beach there?? Good fried clams (almost as good as in Essex).

Sorry, I looked to see if anyone but didn’t see it.
You can use the magnifying glass on the upper right side of the page and enter a topic search. Illi is cool, but I have had a stern warning or two lately about not finding the topic previously posted.

Tangentially, and associated with WW2 but probably not deserving a separate thread, Destination Unknown had a good 1 hour show on D-Day. Josh Gates drives me nuts and lots of the show is clearly staged but this was pretty good. In it:
  • They find two bunkers, before undiscovered, around Maisy Battery Normandy
  • They visit Arromanches to look at the Mulberries
  • Find a ship sunk on June 11th incorrectly labeled
  • Find an unexploded german parachute mine

That is a very cool park. Lewes is an underrated town, IMO.

Related to this topic, the U Boat threat is what necessitated the Cape May Canal. The U Boats would wait at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. They built the canal to let ships hit the ocean a little further north.

Just realized (and confirmed) the film is based on a book I read several times back in high school: THE GOOD SHEPHERD by C. S. Forester.

A fabulous read for anyone interested in naval warfare.....the book’s in my basement (somewhere), gonna track it down and give it another read before the movie comes out.

How did Tom Hanks perform as Mr Rogers? Was it an entertaining film ? I can google it . But I choose not too. Consulting the AKB instead .

It seems as though almost EVERY movie has Tom Hanks in it!

And he’s good, very good, in almost every role. I’m just stunned how he has the time to be in all these movies.....

As Charles Manson said, “if you’re going to do something, do it well”.

Ok, who can quote the follow up sentence and no cheating.

I have been on many of the wrecks off that area. Was't called the graveyard of the Atlantic for nothing.

I watched about half of it on a plane (waiting to finish watching until it comes out on something i have for free). It kept my attention. Hanks was good, he wasn't trying to over act it in my opinion. Storyline was decent as much as a story about Mr. Rogers can be. Definitely something that if you are old enough to have watched Mr. Rogers is worth 2 hours on a rainy day or on vacation or something where you are looking for just a relaxing movie to watch.

I was looking forward to seeing this in the theatre but guess that isn't going to happen. Apple bought the movie and I guess anyone who doesn't have Apple TV is screwed.

I used to fish a lot of the Jersey shore and we used to hit many of the wrecks. I didn't realize at the time until I looked the wrecks up later that most were sunk by German subs. Never realized how close they were to our ports. I remember driving by those gun towers in Delaware as a kid. Haven't been down that way in years. Its no wonder how easy it was to get US citizens to join in and all do our part to fight the war.

I watched this movie this weekend waiting for my daughters swim meet that lasted six hours but wouldn’t let parents in even after a 2.5 hour drive. Whatever....

really good movie. They didn’t waste any time and had minimal character development. If you like private Ryan this is similar after a few minutes of education about crossing the Atlantic during the war.

it really gave me an understanding of how the bridge worked and how small the tin cans were. Some cool strategy episodes and visuals. There were times when the computer generation was pretty clear. Great notion of how the war ships herded and protected the freighters and troop carriers. Some great visuals on how vast the sea is.

Tom Hanks is awesome and it almost feels like he got promoted out of Ryan and into a navy captain. I watched it on an iPad and can only imagine the sound of you’ve got a good hook up.

4.5 stars of 5 as I learned a lot, acting was really good and they didn’t waste time with non war stuff. CGI was a little apparent.

By the way, it is no longer an additional charge.... if you have apple + you can view it or download it. I got apple + for six months for upgrading my phone

I’ve been on several myself. A whole industry diving those things. Some are at 130’sw. safe to dive

I think it’s merchant marines, not navy destroyers... I could be wrong. I did see it over the summer and it was entertpaining.

My sister has map of the coast with all the ships marked from ancient wooden ships of early explorers to ones sunk by German U boats. Complete with names, dates of sinking, and cause. Amazing how many ships, and their sailors, are at eternal rest there.

So, can I even watch this thing if I don't have Apple TV?
No. You have to have the subscription to Apple TV.

This movie was supposed to be a summer blockbuster but COVID. so to mitigate their loss they distributed through apple and it cost something like $20 to view.

its run its course and is now just part of the subscription fee. It will make its way to the other outlets, is my guess, as the next steps. Perhaps March.

they aren’t publishing its income but I expect they were looking for over $200m in the USA in theaters. I’ll bet it got 1/10th of that

Not in the category of Das Boot, but a good film that I enjoyed about the Atlantic.

No blackout rules were used that created a submariners dream with ships easy to spot. The admiral in charge should have been canned for what he did.

You get on the right beaches (like North Carolina) and you'll still find coal and congealed oil lumps on the beach from sunken WW II ships. 75 years later.

I watched it again last night and it was very good. Talk about feeling helpless at times. WOW.

Das boot was awesome. When prochnow screamed ALARM you felt it.
