After Osborne they fired Solich who won 74% of his games abd Pelini who won 70%. The ugly truth? Osborne won 83% of his games but would never have matched than in the B1G. Pelini's 70% was a actually very good for B1G. Bad luck or bad karhma?

It's a lack of patience that leads to a downward spiral. If you fire coaches every few years, your program has no consistency. That usually means taking a step back.

Replacing Osborne was going to be tough no matter who got the job. The rise of spread offenses hurt Nebraska (finding a QB to run that offense who could throw was tough when the spread/zone read allowed for better passing, less hits) and they probably overreacted to getting stomped by Miami (one of the best teams ever). Also the Stoops and Brown eras coincided with this time frame.

To me, I don't know why you fire Solich in '03 after 9 wins when you didn't fire him for 7 the year prior. Trying to go from option to West Coast was crazy in '04 with Callahan. Should have slowed the transition and at least went Zone Read as it was all the rage. Seems wild to accept his 5-6 though.

Its called bad decisions. There's no such thing as long term bad luck.

They stole a championship from joepa while using some pretty bad characters so who cares
Far be it from me to defend the then criminals of the plains, but they didn’t steal anything. That was done by petty, jealous voters, both sportswriters and coaches, in the Nation’s polls. Many of whom were his fellow BIG coaches, and the columnists who covered those teams.

I think Pelini is an old school coach that looked very blue collar. the Neb elites no longer wanted that. Rhule is a good coach and will get it turned around but how long will it take? Neb dithered so much that they've really hurt the brand. It will take some time to get a talented team on the field.

Now do NW! They may be the worst B1G team we've seen in quite a while.

How do you define turning it around for Nebraska? National Championship Contender? Big Championship Contender? Annually 9-3 and play in a good bowl?

None of the previous coaches after Osborn competed for any kind of championship. I’d say consistent 9 win seasons

I agree with that. Given their location and the other recruiting disadvantages, that probably is the ceiling.

Actually a B1G beat voter left PSU off his ballot. B1G refs and admn have always put the Lions last.
Yes and I think it was some joker who worked for a Cleveland paper. OT:Remember Dave Rimmington the aa center. The guy looked like Godzilla. He was one of many that went through that program.

keep in mind that Osborne was a very early adopter of NIL and PED. All those players that went to Nebraska from Southern California and New Jersey came at a price. Anyone who does not think Dr Tom had a serious bag man operation is kidding themselves. And the other part of his success was the flagrant use of PED. Everyone made big deal of his use of Olympic weight training as to why his players were bigger and stronger than everyone else, but it was the extensive PED operation that was the core of the strength program there.

He's got to either open up the old recruiting grounds (Cali, Florida, NJ) or just simply start pulling in and developing high end talent. He's got PA ties, Texas history, and NFL resume. Perhaps he can work the PAC additions to his advantage and build inroads out west, but I hate to say that a successful Rhule likely means he is recruiting kids we definitely want from PA.

Add in the extra scholarships they had for in-state athletes that was separate from the NCAA limits for football.

I think the consistent 9 wins like Iowa is what UNL should strive for and be ok with. But they won't. Iowa seems to recognize their ceiling and they're pretty much ok with that.

Iowa has known it for 50 years. They had a good run in the 50s, otherwise they were basically Northwestern until Fry took over. Ferentz has kept the status quo.

Yup, AP voted for Nebraska. Including the columnists from PA.

They will turn it around, but they certainly took the “long way around” to get there. Matt Rhule is a good hire, although he will exit in 2 years. That’s his style - he has the allegiance of a squirrel to a nut - he cares a lot about them, but not any one in particular.

Bluntly, Nebraska should have stuck with Solich for several more years.

I just looked it up. Tom Osborne went 49-2 in his last four seasons. Wow!

Say what about Osborne not winning 83% of his games if he had coached in B1G? I can’t tell if you are being serious or you probably never watched Big Red during the Osborne years.

Nebraska had monster teams under Osborne and his teams would have destroyed most of the B1G teams. Penn State, Miami and Oklahoma were the only teams that consistently matched up with them back then.

They had unbelievable talent on both sides of the ball every year.

Those teams were stacked with players who won the Outland, Lombardi, Heisman, and every existing all-American award. They practically invented smash-mouth football with their power I formation and whirl option.

Again, I can only assume you were joking with your statement.

They had good teams and other than a season’s opener they usually didn’t load up on tomato cans for non conference games. Something that everyone does today for reasons that I fully understand.

Speaking of openers against non-conference teams, I remember Nebraska dismantled my Nittany Lions 44-6 on August 29, 1983 in New Jersey. That Nebraska team was freaking awesome.
