Last weekend, I finally got to visit the Mariners Museum in Newport News, VA. It was a fascinating experience. The story of these two incredibly innovative and yet equally incredibly unstable vessels is amazing.

The USS Monitor was built in my neighborhood of Greenpoint Brooklyn.
That are actually working on building a little museum to dedicate it.

The turret was as revolutionary as the all metal hull. I suspect if the captain of the Monitor hadn't gotten blinded and the ship retired, it would have defeated the Merrimac outright. The Merrimac was starting to loose a bit of its armor and simply could not turn or go fast enough to keep its guns trained on the Monitor, and when it did gets shots on target they did little more than leave some minor dents.
