170 points

Will Penn State reach 170 points at the NCAA Tournament?

Don't know, don't care. Championships matter, not victory margins. Super Bowl XXIV was won by the 49 ers by 45 points. In Super Bowl XXV the Giants beat the Bills when Norwood missed a last second field goal.

They are both Super Bowl Champions. Margin of victory aside I see PSU winning this year and next.

Will they reach 170 eventually ? It seems more likely than not with the way the are recruiting and the 3 point takedowns. I don’t know about for 2024, but you did not specify this year so I went yes

NIL leveled the playing field though?
Hasn't been, and won't be level for a long time. Money helps but Logistics matter more.

Atleast Iowa is fighting to keep winning. The same can't be said for other programs that used to be in the mix consistently

This coming March. 2024. Sorry I didn't clarify that in the question.

You think 3 point takedowns will get you there? Interesting. I am curious to see the comparison of points to years past after this March.

I agree. Especially when Cael gets the pick of the litter yearly now with NIL and all the other variables going his way.
You mean like the hard work and vision to totally rebuild the PSU wrestling program from the ground up. To build the NLWC into the most successful and desirable wrestling destination in the world.
Those kind of things don't happen by chance and if they did, why haven’t TnT been able to do the same thing, or for that matter, any other D1 wrestling coach?

You really creamed that up

They have a tunnel. A TUNNEL.

Slumlord Supreme told me the playing field was level.

Who are we to doubt the man?
@WildTurk, Serious question- Bob Nichols said the playing field is level, and I expect him to donate so money is not an issue. I see AJ driving around a new sportscar.

Do you think money is still a factor and that PSU is still winning in NIL, despite Bob's statements?

If Messenbrink stays as dominant as he’s been all the way through I think Penn State shatters 170 this year.

I thought NIL was really going to blunt what Cael had going on - with Ohio State really being a threat the way they throw money around in other sports - but it has just bolstered his plan. With by far the best RTC roster and set up, extra funds can be targeted very judiciously to guys who have goals far beyond college wrestling.

Guys who just want a pay day may just go to the highest bidder going forward, but how motivated will they be to improve with even more motivation not to continue to work hard - beyond parties, girls, etc.

What would people rather have this year? The points record at NCAAs or a shutout at CHA?

I thought it was a pipe dream at the start of the year, but if SVN didnt have his season unfortunately cut short, I think PSU would have had a real shot. Would need Bernie Tru to be his usual self in March and our 125lber to continue his trajectory. Mess has given me no reason to doubt that he isnt a top3 scorer at 165.

A healthy SVN and we destroy 170.

Here is an estimate on points just to show how easily we beat 170…
125- 3
133- 15
141- 16
149- 20 with SVN
157- 19
165- 18
174- 24
184- 13
197- 23
HWT- 23

That’s 174 points and I was conservative at the first 4 weights. I think Haines and Mesenbrink score more than 37. And I gave Bernie less than he usually scores at nationals.

With SVN we could’ve broke 180.

Interesting that you cite NIL, and throw everything else, such as development, into a catchall bucket. Almost as if you doubt our coaches ability and are saying we basically buy our team. Despite numerous examples of PSU wrestlers exceeding their recruiting ranking. Also despite wrestlers publically saying they passed up NIL money at other teams to come to PSU.

Team wins of any margin are enough for me. I’ll get more joy from one or two first-time champs, maybe Levi and Kerk.

I have never met Bob. I couldn't put a face to the name. Money is always a factor, especially with the NIL generation coming up now.

Yeah, again, the class of 2022 was tOSU's dynasty-making class with 4 hammers coming into the room, yet the only one wrestling on Saturday night last year was PSU's lone recruit as part of an actual dynasty.

NIL is in the bucket. Don't think to hard on my comment Paul. You're looking for something that's not there.

This is really the answer:

Slumlord Millionaire has certainly tried to throw money around to get kids to Iowa, but the ones who are looking only for the best offer are like the Ferraris, who are still soliciting for a better offer even after getting their bag, or the geriatric underachievers at Michigan. For other kids, like Nagao & Mesenbrink, all they want is to not worry about paying for tuition and housing and to have enough to live on and then they pick the best room for their wrestling goals. I know how you feel about the Ferraris, but it doesn't appear that the guys offering the bag at Iowa really understand how to use it best.

Like many others have said, if SVN didn’t get hurt I think it would’ve been broken. I think Kasak can still AA but SVN was a likely finalist plus a bonus point scorer. I think now they fall just a tiny bit short. That said, I do think that PSU breaks the record in the next few years which is crazy considering we are likely losing 2 4-timers after this season

But you say, NIL and all the other variables, normally if someone names one and lumps the others together it shows what they think is most important.

I think you're just blowing a bunch of hot-air. It's just your opinion based off what you have read on internet forums

Again, they are all together in the bucket. Don't dwell on it. The word And means "in addition to"

I strongly disagree with some of the things that Turk has said about other posters on here, but, I've never seen him as one of the Iowa guys who takes the "PSU is cheating" stance, like IronBird and many others on the GIA site. I've seen him giving us the deserved credit quite often.

I voted no but let's project a tournament that can (without anything outrageous)

Davis - 8th (staying conserative here, looks great but 125 seems anything can happen) - 5.5
Nagao - 5th - 10 (I think he's a kid that jumps levels in tournament like last year though)
Bartlett - 3rd (can't put him ahead of Mendez right now) - 13.5
Kasak - R12 - 2 (really wanted to see him against Gomez, hard to tell how he'll fare against AA guys otherwise)
Levi - 1st (doesn't look like it but no 157 looks flawless, he's finding ways to win) - 20
Mesenbrink - 2nd (avoids Carr in seeding) - 16
Starocci - 1st - 20
Truax - 5th - 10
Brooks - 1st - 20
Kerkvliet - 1st - 20

Total - 137

Can we collect 33 bonus?
