1967 PIAA Program/Bracket ... Wrestling message board member listed!

I remember Clyde Frantz wrestling for Hughesville. I did not realize that he beat Andy Matter in the finals. Quite a few District 4 guys. Thanks for posting.

Old photo shows another BWI message board poster! :)

Interesting, one of the Heavys used to post on the Lair in purple crayon.

Wow, talk about some memories. Some of the guys from District 3 whose names are on the brackets in the 2nd picture were good friends.

Hughesville is a small rural community in D4 that was coached for many years by former BEN wrestler Pete Wolfe. Hughesville has had 8 PIAA champs and was dominate in the 1960's, when Clyde wrestled. Perhaps the top wrestler during that era was 112 pounder and 2Xer , Keith Taylor.

I notice the picture of John Chatman of Trinity as one of the 1968 champs on the 1969 tournament program.

I wonder if John had any idea what was in store for him in the 1969 finals?

That was before my time. Of course I had to look it up suspecting it was to Schalles. What a way to lose for Chatman. Was that at Rec Hall, @royboy ?

Rippey back then was the equivalent of some of today's top HS stars like Beau Bartlett. Not too many guys made it through the entire 6 minutes against him his senior year. He also turned into a good college wrestler at Lock Haven.

Time for some trivia.

Who were the future NCAA champions listed in those brackets? I count 3.

Who were the future EIWA champions listed in those brackets? I count 4.

Who were the future NCAA AAs listed in those brackets? I count 6 but I could be missing one or two more.

One of the greatest matches ever didn't actually occur in States, but in the northwest regional actually in 1972 when Henry Green upset Nate Carr.

Rippey was like a cross between Zain Retherford and Chris Taylor lol

Yes. The PIAA wrestling championships were held at Rec Hall at Penn State and then transitioned to the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg in the early 1970s.

Penn State also hosted the 1968 NCAA Championships.

One PIAA title and Two NCAA titles

That always amazes me how tough PA States are, when there is more success after high school for the top platform.

Jake Herbert was a one time PIAA champ. Yet in College 3 time finalist, 2X Champ (lost to Askren) and a Hodge.

Phil Davis was a 2x placer at PIAAs (no champs) and a 4x NCAA AA and 1 time champ. There are so many examples it would take a year to list them all.

And prior to 1974, it was one class.

And 3-time NCAA champion Ed Ruth never won a PIAA championship (though he did transfer to Blair and won a prep school title his senior year)

Of course, Ruuuuth lost to a pretty decent wrestler in the PIAA tournaments. ;)

Twice no less to the Q.

In a 1966 dual meet, Alex Reis of Williamsport defeated Rippey. Then in the PIAA semi finals Rippey got revenge with an 8-0 victory.
The Haven had a powerhouse in that era. Al Fricke was great too, he had a good rivalry with Jerry white, although I don't think Al ever won on the mat...He was, however VERY PROLIFIC at the bar lol.

Fricke wrestled high school at Clearfield. College at Lock Haven.
Fricke is a hoot to talk with. He knows everybody you know and will trade stories for hours. If a few beers are involved, the stories get better and funnier.

I heard Rippey played with him that match and was smashing his face into the mat lol. The stories I hear about Rippey are something else. Pretty much a legend in these parts

I didn't see the match myself, but some friends from Clearfield told me that the Clearfield guy at 133 gave Rippey one heck of a challenge in Rippey's senior year in HS. If I recall correctly, Rippey moved up a weight for the dual. The Clearfield guy (I think his name was Bender) had a style that was a a lot like Schalles. Evidently he had Rippey on his back at the end of the match and might have gotten the pin except that the clock ran out.

In the 1967 finals, Rippey faced Alan Uyeda of Conestoga Valley (D-3). Uyeda was undefeated in 1966 and won states at 127, with Rippey winning at 120.

Uyeda came into the state finals in 1967 also undefeated.
Rippey 11 -- Uyeda 1
