2017 LB depth chart

I don't see John Reid ever leaving Corner. He and Haley will stay at CB, Wade will be the nickel, maybe get a look at safety. Look for a bigger corner like Garrett Taylor though, he could get a look at safety for sure.
Taylor was a higher rated recruit coming out of high school...I think he could be real good.

There seems to be this feeling that because Lamont Wade got away with playing corner at 5' 9" in high school that he is just going to step in, start at cornerback and be a lockdown player at that spot. I listen to the Keystone Sports Network podcasts and Ross Tucker, a former NFL player, expressed some concern about Wade's ability to play at the same level at PSU- at least right away. The panel that he was speaking with agreed. I am sure that he could fit in quite well as the nickel cornerback this fall but to just assume that he is going to be a shutdown corner right off the bat is asking a bit much for a 5' 9" player.

How many 5' 9" safeties are there in the B1G? Please do not get me wrong, I am very glad that Wade is going to play for PSU and I am not trying to downplay his talent but I get the impression that people are expecting superior play from him next season and that may be unfair to him. Lamont Wade is not going to be able to solve the talent/depth issues that will exist at safety in 2017.

I think that we have to accept that the PSU defense will have some holes . . . nothing to be ashamed of as other teams will have holes too. As someone in this thread said earlier, the offense is probably going to have to carry the load. There has just been a lack of talent coming in at safety and linebacker over the past few years and we all know the reasons for that. You could only do so much with the restrictions the coaching staffs were working under and it will take a little time to even out the talent distribution. I would be willing to give up one or two of the defensive linemen on the roster for a quality safety (or two).
Agree completely on Wade....not expecting a lot after watching the All star game last weekend. Still very excited about him though. I think he can come in and play nickel. If he has good instincts he could also play some FS IMHO. Bob Sanders wasn't that tall at Iowa and had a pretty good NFL career too.

I hope we can somehow snag another LB in this class who could play either MLB or WLB. I don't understand our LB recruiting. We need more guys who can play inside. We got none last year and probably only one for 2017. Missing out on some 4 or 5 star ILB doesn't mean you quit recruiting the position.

Been a huge frustration of mine got excited a few months ago when that Texas kid name escapes me that committed to A&M had us on his list thought he wanted to join a winner.

Well staff might be looking at Wade at Safety based on his comments, I guess Miller depends on what the staff thinks is a bigger need LB/S. What about Anthony Johnson? I thought I remember him being one of the bigger sized DB recruits

What happened to Garrett Taylor? Everyone was so excited when he committed, yet I never see him mentioned

Where is he gonna' play then?

Height is much less of any issue at S than at CB

(not that his height would preclude him from playing either)

Personally, I'd expect the most likely spot for him as a freshman is at "nickle corner"......were the variety of assignments and packages would be more limited (not "simple"....but more limited than as a three-down S)

He didn't seem to have too much trouble racking up awards at the UA AA Bowl practices against tall receivers this past week......

Oruwariye could probably play safety as could T.J. Johnson. Petrishen, Scott and Monroe may help here, too. Did our safeties even intercept a ball in 2016 ?

Do I have this correct?

Starters – Cabinda, Bowen, Farmer/Brown
Back-ups – Brown/Farmer, Thomas, Cooper, Jarvis Miller ?, Toney?, B. Smith?
True Frosh – Rivers, Faison-Walden, Franklin

We are already somewhat thin at this position. If the question marks are indeed question marks, and if none of the freshman are ready, then we are scary thin.

Thoughts/insight on this?

Here is how I see it in 2017:

OLB: Bowen, Brown
MLB: Cabinda, Smith, Cooper
OLB: Farmer, Miller/Faisen-Walden

With the potential of Rivers playing as a true freshman as well if there are injuries. Miller may move back to Safety and we'll have a better idea of where will play next year as Spring practices conclude.

Cooper could potentially play some outside, but I have not seen the quickness or lateral movement from him to believe he can be effective outside. Some here suggest he could redshirt in 2017 and then compete to start at MLB in 2018 and 2019, but I don't see that happening.

Taylor played special teams this year and was arround the ball regularly. But with all the more experienced CB's ahead of him on the depth chart he never made an impact at CB in 2017, his redshirt freshman season. That doesn't mean he won't climb the depth chart in 2018 or 2019. He has good size and could move to Safety, or he may be counted on at CB in 2018 if a CB or 2 ahead of him on the CB depth chart move to Safety..... It will be interesting to see how he progresses this Spring.

I look for Scott and Monroe to rise up to the top of the Safety depth chart this Spring..... and it will be interesting to see where Johnson practices this Spring.

Monroe played a good bit on special teams and he looks like he has nice size for a Safety. He looks taller and longer than the 5'11" he is listed at.

At 5' 9" Lamont Wade is not going to be able to step in and start at safety in 2017. It is just not going to happen. I think there needs to be some concern with Wade at how well he is going to be able to cover 6' 2' wide receivers while giving up 5 inches. Wade is not Superman.

So because he is 5'9 and probably done growing height wise he will never play a down for PSU defense according to this. He will play next year, especially if Allen left.

What does Safety look like? If Allen leaves, we lose both starters. Apke I guess would be one of them?

Safety will be pretty interesting this spring. I see two guys that could move over with the addition of Wade and Johnson at CB. Wade could even get a look there as apparently he is a very physical player and is an EE. I think maybe Amani O and Garrett Taylor are two guys that could move over. At least one of them maybe? It would be nice if the room was there for TCF in this current class as he is a pretty big kid at DB that could fill a big CB slot or safety.

Here is who is left I believe.
Allen (was rumored to be leaning early on, but who knows now?)
Apke
Scott
Monroe
Petrishen
A. Johnson

Frosh or guys who could move?
Wade
Sunderland
Amani O
G Taylor

CB next year you then have
Reid, Campbell, Haley, Z McPherson, Amani O*, Taylor*, Wade*, Johnson

Wade reminds me of a much more physical (and at this point in his career) more gifted version of Dre Bly, who was an absolute ball hawk at about 5'9" at UNC. Went on to have a pretty nice pro career too. Again, the big difference I see between the two is that Wade is much more physical and plays like he's 6'3".

Wade has been going up against wide receivers that are bigger than he is for years on the camp and 7 on 7 circuits, and has gone up against the best WRs in the country. He's won far, far more battles than he's lost. I'm not sure why that would change going up against the same guys again in college.

We REALLY need Marcus Allen to come back. As I have said before. As far as the other safety spot, I have no idea who they play, because Golden was on the field 90 percent of the time. We will have issues at safety as far as experience, but I think we have the TALENT there.

At linebacker, the more I look at it, the more I think that 2 of the 3 incoming freshmen will need to be green lighted. Remember though, we are looking through a prism of a freaking perfect storm of injuries that occurred this year at linebacker. No, I am not going to jinx it, but even if we are bit by injuries again at LB in 2017, it is safe to say that the freak situation of 2016, will not happen again. Still, we are thin. Jan Johnson has given up football to concentrate on wrestling. WW and Bell are gone. And only Toney is a possibility as far as redshirt freshmen, and he wants to play defensive end. That leaves a running back(Thomas), and 4 linebackers. Include the walkon Vranec and you have six linebackers: Brown, who needs to gain 20 pounds, Bowen, Cabinda, Farmer, Cooper, and Vranec. Unless you are going with only 6 eligible linebackers, either somebody gets green lighted, or somebody gets moved.

Isn't Smith back?

I think that Nick Scott and Amani Oruwariye could be the starters if Marcus leaves. Better for him to stay and improve in pass coverage. USC receivers ate him up -- a bad game for someone leaving for the NFL. Scott and Amani are really both SS. Could always play Christian Campbell at FS since Z. McPhearson looks to back up at CB. And what ever happened to heralded recruit Garrett Taylor?

I wouldn't put a lot of stock into one All-Star game. Kid dominated camps against elite competition and has the NATIONAL accolades to justify his lofty (Top Ten OVERALL on Rivals) ranking. If he can contribute at the level Reid did as a FR (and that was pretty significant IMO), we'll be fine. I think we'll see a lot of him though. He plays with a chip on his shoulder because of folks like you...

Your correct in not putting a lot of stock in one game I saw on TV--I haven't seen him at all so I tuned in for just him. My expectations were a little higher after reading all the great things mentioned on this board. He defended a lot of the passes his way with ease--I was expecting and was wrong for that-a pick 6 ;) lol....further I mentioned earlier in this post--competing against your peers and guys that have been playing for 2 years at the college level is another thing-that is to be determined. BTW-I DONT HAVE AN ISSUE with his HEIGHT at all! I am Excited about him--but I don't have high expectations of him to be our savior this season in where we have gaps that's all...All good! WE ARE!

AWESOME! Would love that....it will be interesting to see how he handles more experienced QB's and receivers.
You do realize CRIMSON is the "21 Guns" of the South?

I just hope he hasn't used that "MoJo" to completely wreck Wade's career. :)

I think the excitement and euphoria of the 2016 season may mask what are some serious talent and or depth issues at both linebacker and safety.

Most likely, the only incoming linebacker that is going to see time will be Dylan Rivers. I guess that it is possible that Brelin Faison-Walden could make the depth chart since he is coming in early but I tend to believe that he is going to redshirt. The question remains though as to whether he even stays at LB.

Starting linebackers: Cabinda (Sr/Sr), Bowen (Jr/Jr) and ????
Potential linebackers for the third spot: Cameron Brown (So/So), Koa Farmer (Sr/Jr), Dylan Rivers (Fr/Fr), Jake Cooper (Jr/Jr) and Brandon Smith (GS/Sr).
Second-team linebacker: Brelin Faison-Walden (Fr/Fr)

You cannot expect that Jonathan Thomas (Sr/Jr), a former running back, will be able to do anything to contribute meaningful minutes, tackles, etc. Jason Vranic is in the same boat.

If Marcus Allen (Sr/Sr in 2017) leaves, then there will be a severe talent and experience shortage at safety.
Starting safeties: Ayron Monroe (Jr/So) and Apke (Sr/Sr)
I pencil Monroe and Apke in there simply because they have the most experience.
Potential second-team safeties: Jarvis Miller (Jr/So), John Petrishen (Jr/So), Jonathan Sutherland (Fr/Fr), and Brailyn Franklin (Fr/Fr).

You can slice this any way that you want but the two positions are going to paper-thin on talent and depth in 2017. Someone mentioned Shaka Toney (So/Fr in 2017) but he has expressed a desire to play defensive end and I think that is where the staff has him slated.

The suggestion that CB T.J. Johnson (So/Fr) could be moved to safety makes sense. I could see that happening during spring practice as he is 6' 2"/180 but may even be a little bigger by August. I cannot see the value in moving John Reid (Jr/Jr) to safety and Lamont Wade (Fr/Fr) is too short (5' 9") and too inexperienced to jump in at safety.

I think teams will attack PSU deep at every opportunity this fall due to the lack of talent and experience at safety. I like Cameron Brown but I do have some worries about whether he can put on enough weight to play 40-50 snaps a game.
As far as wade playing safety, see also: earl thomas. Don't let height get into your head too much. If you can play, you can play.

Monroe had a lot of ST's tackles. At least

Muggsy Bogues, 5'3" point guard. 14 NBA seasons. Too short to make it though.
