I was in Delta Phi Alpha (German studies honor frat). Got a nice meal, met a couple of nice people, and got a certificate. Haven't done anything with it since. I suppose I should see if they have an alumni thing going on or not. It did probably help me get into my foreign studies program the next year, though (and for the record, I was a Chemistry major--but liked German due to my heritage).

Does anyone know anything about these? Obviously, I know Phi Beta Kappa and the Flat Hat Club but it’s hard to tell which ones are real and which ones are fake, money grabs. My daughter was nominated for a one today. She’s a junior in college. Do they carry any weight for resumes and grad school apps?

Any thoughts opinions, experiences, etc?

Phi beta kappa carries weight. Spend the money if she’s offered.
Golden key doesn’t. Don’t.

Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi (less prestigious than PBK, but I think it’s open to all majors), and the major-specific honor societies are really the only ones worth anything IMO. Some are one fee for life, others try to pull an annual fee from you every year; in the latter case, I’d just pay the first fee to get the certificate and then let the membership lapse.

Story: a woman in our office wore her Phi Beta Kappa key to work on her blouse every day for about a year, and one day she finally came to work without it. Somebody said to her ‘hey Denise, where’s your Phi Beta Kappa key, did you leave it on your pajamas?’ That’s the last we saw of her Phi Beta Kappa key.

Say no to Golden Key (open to anyone with checkbook).

Phi Kappa Phi is OK. I'm not sure being a member got me anything, but it is somewhat selective (you have to be in the top 7% of your class) and there a nice awards ceremony and reception afterwards. I don't think it cost anything to initially join, but then they hit you up for dues the next year (at which point, I'd say let your membership lapse).
