If you want something like a TR6 or a Midget, buy the best example you can afford and make it one with ample documentation

Or just buy a 10 year Miata and drive the heck out of it

I was recently looking at older used miatas and was surprised that Porsche Boxters (base model) were about the same price as the miatas. Maybe there is a reliability issue. In any case there were quite a few Boxters well under 10k and many with low milage

I was curious if anyone is into collecting cars? Any tips, words of wisdom, warnings?

I have been considering the possibility of picking up a few cheap roadsters to feed my open top, 2 seater fetish.
Don't do so expecting to make money of even break even. Do it if you can afford to gradually lose money "topless".

My vehicle philosophy is to own one fiscally-inexplicable vehicle for no other reason than periodically "taking her for a drive" and being thankful that you can afford such luxury.

Beyond one, they become gross vehicular liabilities.

If you’re looking for older cars that’ll qualify as antique show cars (many from the 70s or before—haven’t considered the requirements in a long time), don’t register it as a daily driver. Will only cost a few hundy a year to insure it.

I enjoy window shopping for cars... I could afford to buy one if I gave up other hobbies. But not ready to do that yet.

My list:
Porsche 912 (66-69)
Toyota FJ60 or FJ62
Ford F-250 (92-98)
Dodge Power Wagon (41-60)
Ford Galaxie 500XL (65-66)
IH Travelall (61-68)

Get a bigger garage.

I'm doing just that. Beam over garage 18x8 garage door is being set in place tomorrow for my 26x28 detached garage. 10.5' walls and with tail bearing trusses I'll have 12.5' of head room - enough to walk under cars up on a lift. The lift will also allow for stacking of cars during the winter months.....

Our integral 2 car garage is pretty tight for 2 cars, especially with all the tools lining the side. So that garage will go to the wife.

I'll probably start off with something like an Audi TT. But after my wife eventually calms down from the $ being dropped on the garage, I'll be looking for a C-6 vette.............

My wife says the only upside will be seeing more of our oldest son who is also into cars. ;) Son just bought a 2002 Celica, and we have been looking at GTI's as well.

Love the old power wagons, my friend growing up had a 55 that we tore around the mountain in, it would go anywhere! Brakes went out once going down a hill and it took several trees to stop us, lol

Just some thoughts.

Decide what kind of collection you want to have. If you just want to have a few old cars around the house then you don’t have a car collection-you have a junkyard.

Visit local car shows and talk to gear heads who have multiple older cars. They can give you the pitfalls of owning multiple older cars.

Make sure you have a trusted mechanic

Make sure to get a good relationship with the manager of the local auto salvage yard.

Old cars must be maintained constantly to be reliable. But people get busy and tend to neglect them. Which is probably how they ended up in your hands

Good luck. Keep us posted.

I have been doing a lot of window shopping too. :) (bringatrailer.com) Most are cheapies a la the Boxster and Miata NA but the dream cars are Austin Healey 3000 mk III and a 356c.
Yeah, I love bring a trailer... I had to unsubscribe because I was spending too much time searching for cars I wouldn’t buy.

I heard a quote from Wayne Carini recently about test driving a Austin Healey: “If you aren’t smiling after test driving this car, it’s not the car for you.” To me, that says it all.

It’s all about the “smiles per mile”.

I get it, but Wayne has the money to fix the Austin when it breaks down every 60 miles.

Matchbox was always my favorite:

Although I liked Corgi too:

Neither "open top" although here's one from Matchbox:

My son keeps talking about dropping a Chevy LS into a Miata. He says that they put LS's into trucks that are much cheaper to pick than trying to find one from a vette......

You might have to replace the drivetrain as well, not sure the stock Miata components will handle the torque

slap some sense into that kid ... he probably would add a 30” lift kit as well

the whole point of a capable sports-car like a Miata is lightness / handling / flingability...

Shoehorning a 650lb iron-block V8 in there would ruin the 50/50 weight distribution on the chassis, add metric ass-tons of understeer and just about everything else

Better off getting one that lifts from the frame than the wheels unless you really want it for storage space. Really limits work you can do when you can’t even take the wheels off.

It comes with a sliding jack tray, so I can do anything on it that a frame lift can do.

I like four post lifts as they are more stable, and actually can be moved easily.
