42 wins in 4 years

42 wins from 2016-19

The last four year stretch with that many wins was 1993-96

The only period when we ever had more was 1971-74

Beat it, Franklin haters.

Well, “way back when” teams only played 10 regular season games, then only played 11.

Not trying to disrespect the 42 wins, just hard to compare fairly to past periods.

That's a fair point.

It is, however, the first time since 1996-1999 that we finished in the top-20 in four consecutive seasons.

That damn UK loss prevented us from four straight top-10 finishes. Which is incredible to think about given where we were as a program only 4-5 years ago.

This is true. I am a PRO-Franklin supporter. Love Franklin. Wish he stays at PSU until the day he retires. ..... That being said, you are absolutely correct. A pet-peeve of mine are this "historical stats" that do not take into account inequalities.

For example, over the last 5-10 years NFL QBs have been shattering records. Seems like every year new passing records are being set: Most Yards, Most Completions, TDs........ They never mention that as recently as the 70's NFL teams only played 14 games.

We played 11 regular season games in each of those stretches. So 12 games each year

vs. 13 (and 14). Every year we play 12 regular season games + a bowl game to = 13. In 2016, we played 12 regular season games + the B1G Champ Game + the Rose Bowl to give is 14. So from 2016-19, we played : 14, 13, 13 and 13 games.

What Franklin has accomplished since 2016 is great. I think there is no doubt that from 2016-present, what Franklin has accomplished at Penn State makes him one of the top 10 coaches in college football: Total # of wins, consecutive weeks in top 25, NY6 Bowl games, .... But in fairness teams did play less games just 30-40 years ago.

Then just consider the 42 wins on its own merits. How many other teams have done that in the past four years. Not many. It’s still impressive regardless of how many games were played 50 years ago.

Exactly. The Total # of wins should just be taken on it's own merit. There is a stat they showed during PSU games this year on "Total number of wins the last 4 years"... PSU is like # 5 on the list behind only teams like Clemson, Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma.... THAT is the more relevant stat.

Did you make that arguement to downplay Joe's wins?

Who exactly did we beat in those 4 years? OSU and Michigan 1 time each. No doubt we are a powerhouse

And in the 70s and 80s (probably 90s also) the DBs could mug the WRs the entire route with rarely being called for PI. It’s a completely different game now. So QBs should only be judged against their peers in the same time frame with regard to passing stats

Bingo.... maybe 4-5 others! Enjoy the moment.

You forgot to mention the 23 losses Franklin had over the last six years.

I love that stat but it is not the same. More games now each year. My daughter asked how is Clemson 13-0 before last nights game.
Hmmm.

WTF is your problem in that you have to make up shit to bolster your anti-Franklin agenda? Either you’re seriously delusional or you’re just a troll who barely follows PSU football but gets off on being a jerk on the board. Either way, life sucks for you, that much is obvious. What a pathetic post.

Well to be fair, the knock on Franklin is he wins the games he has more talent than but never out coaches anyone and beats the really good teams, especially on the road. To get to next level he has to.

Did you only count Joe's wins vs teams with more talent and on the road?

Well then to be fair look at it in terms of winning percentage

0.792 from 2016-19

The last four-year periods when it was higher were 1994-97 and 1993-96. And before that 1980-83.

Franklin has restored the program to an elite level. The Franklin naysayers can f off

I would hope that no one would say that we have not had success. We just need to beat osu every other year and Michigan 2 out of 3.

Go .500 against one of the top 3 or 4 programs in the nation, and win 67% against one of the top 10 programs in the nation? That's a tall order.

LSU beat Alabama for the first time since 2011 this year. And LSU has been a really good program. There's no shame in losing most of your games against a truly elite in-conference rival.

My own expectation? Beat Ohio State ~3 times per decade. Beat Michigan ~6 times per decade. And minimize the losses against all others.

That sets you up for 2-3 shots at a Big Ten title each decade. And anywhere from 9 to 11 wins during the other seasons. I'd be happy with that.

The only thing that matters is beating Ohio State. That's the final hurdle. Beat Ohio State a few years in a row and we can begin talking about being elite.

As someone pointed out, LSU beat Alabama this year for the first time since 2011. And now LSU is playing in the final game of the year.

Joe had some good years after 2000 but he was past his prime as we all
Know. But, coulda woulda shoulda.

Franklin is our guy with a new experienced oc in the big ten no less. So we will see how we develop next couple of years. Exciting times.

Michigan is not one of top ten teams. When we get that in our head it will Not Be such a mental task to beat them more often.

Well both Franklin and OBrien were better against Michigan than the old Paterno staff

They're a top 10 program......not necessarily a top 10 team every year. They've recruited pretty close to us, and while we've played Ohio State far tougher and have generally been better over the past four years, on the aggregate, Michigan will be a tough test. That's why I said I think we should beat them 6/10 times.

Beating them 2/3 of the time means that we're essentially winning in Ann Arbor every other trip. That's a tall order.

At the turn of the century that staff could not win 50 percent of its games. And the 2002 team produced four first round draft picks. Four! It wasn’t the players, Yet four out of five years we were terrible It took them five years to get things straightened out. They were not only past their primes they should have been fired

Hmmm.

Yup. I believe it was last year, after Clemson beat Bama, they posted a stat on TV proclaiming that Clemson was the first (or only) team to ever go 15-0 in a college season............ Well, up until 4 years ago we all did not have a semi-final and a final which equates to 2 extra games instead of just the extra bowl game.
