It’s been somewhat puzzling as to why we haven’t come up with many, the past 2 seasons.
This season alone, I can think of 3 50-50 balls opponents came up with (2 of them for TDs): The Pitt T. Mack catch, the Purdue TD catch, and the Iowa B. Smith TD catch this past Saturday.
I just find it strange that we have been on the wrong end of so many of these, as of recent.

Its kept me awake too.

Player height? Or, as has puzzlingly become the fashion in sports commentary, length?

Receiver needs to be taller than the corner/safety covering them

We just don't throw them honestly. It used to be a big part of this offense, but we really don't put them downfield as much. Clifford struggled with the deep ball early on and now we have sort of moved off it entirely. This would be a good week to take a couple strikes to shorter/george. Michigan plays press man and they will be holding, tugging, and interfering all day. Even if we don't complete them, I could see a couple big flags.

50/50 Balls?

What are the odds for what's between John O'Neill's legs?

I'll say this..... if PSU does NOT hit a couple (probably more than a "couple") big plays downfield on Saturday, they won't win.

Each game is different, and vs an Iowa one can win without really forcing a lot of big play opportunities (though you should certainly take a few shots - - - - more than PSU did on Saturday).
UMich? Against their Defense and Defensive Schemes? You better be looing for the chunk plays early, often, and often again :) Otherwise, you play the game on their terms.

Saturday night will be interesting.

The way to hit big plays vs press coverage and our personnel is quick slants, crossing routes and rub routes. We have receivers who can turn a 5 yard throw into an 80 yard TD and a QB with speed who can hurt you when unaccounted for. Think this will be a theme on Saturday night.

Reid, TCF and Gordon are where Michigan’s biggest matchup advantages lie. They should throw deep early and often. They will instead likely run Charbonnet 35 times for 45 yards

50-50 balls are what you have when you reach 50 years of age. 30-70 when you reach 65.... etc etc. They are a myth in football. When throwing to Mr. body control Chris Godwin what was called a 50-50 ball was really a 90-10 ball. I think he has averaged 150 ypg the last three games with Tampa Bay.

Our current receiving corp (at this point of Cliffords development) is more designed for 10-60 balls,,,, throw the ball 10 yards to them in space and watch them run 60 yards.... although Friermuth, Bowers and soon Shorter and George will change that..... George intrigues me the most because, I believe, he can do it both ways. Time will tell.
