50 years ago today (July 20, 2019): “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Obviously a different time and place in technological history, but 93% of TVs in America were tuned into the moon landing. Now that's some ratings.

I live close to Johnson Space Center and driving by never gets old. I’ve been on several of the facility tours and walking through the Apollo mission control room was one of the best experiences of my life.

Saw a special where they said the Apollo 11 communications system had half the capacity of a Gameboy. Amazing

Small step for (a) man
Yea Armstrong says he said “..for a man...” but it’s not audible in the tapes...at least I’ve never been able to decipher it in the quick moment between “for” and “man”. As Armstrong himself stated, it wouldn’t make sense not to include the “a”. There are different theories as to why you can’t clearly hear the a...some say a transmission glitch at that moment and there’s the take that in his central Ohio dialect, “for a” and “for” sound the same.

At best it’s “furra”man.

Greatest human endeavor! Remember it vividly. I was 11. Unbelievable to even fathom today but in 1969? One of the few bright spots of the sixties....
60s were very tumultuous. Just an amazing amount of major events for one decade. From civil rights to war and assassinations. The riots and protest marches. We saw dogs and water hoses unleashed on marchers, then Walter Cronkite reporting on the first of the two Kennedys to die. Less than 5 years later America's news icon was doing it again to a stunned nation. The great society. The gulf of Tonkin. Escalation in Vietnam. MLK killed then Bobby. Riots in Chicago at the DEM convention.Nixon squeaks by Humphrey and then Woodstock. The moon landing was easily the biggest achievement in mankinds history I believe and it came at one of the most absolute crazy stretches in modern history. Our country went through extreme changes in the 1960's. Its absolutely amazing how much.

Amazing considering the risks and limited computer technology. Commitment, curiosity, intelligence, creativity, innovative spirit, bravery, and national pride led them to success. Just amazing.
Imagine a tong-less breakfast buffet in zero-gravity conditions, Bob--sweaty hands grasp and release foodstuffs, frosted Mini-Wheats float sideways past your face, a cruel hoax where you must lie down to swallow and pray you are strong enough to force it down. A customer sneezes and saliva droplets dance past your face, the simple motion of your breathing making them impossible not to ingest.

It would be a journey to Hell.

I’m not going to the moon until they open a Starbucks there. Let’s be realistic.

Obviously NASA would have to adjust the accommodations in space before I would go.

I like the way Billy Joel summed it up, but thanks.

2019 version “one small step for space person, one giant leap for people-kind.”
