My first PSU game at Beaver Stadium? Syracuse victory in 1968. Back then the Cuse was a bitter rival.

Most shocking loss? Losing to Colorado by 30 points in 1970. After 30 games with no losses.

Fondest memories? Watching TV Quarterbacks with Joe, Jim Tarman, and Fran Fisher going over clips of the previous game and giving a profile of the coming opponent. "Boston University is fundamentally very sound and they will not make mistakes. We will have a very tough game. We have not practiced well, and I am concerned." Joe always found a way to pump up our opponent.

Karma - We crushed TCU 66-14 and a few days later their coach died of a heart attack. Later, we played Tennessee and nothing went right. I remember our punter kicked the ball up the rear end of one of our blockers, leading to a Volunteer TD. Our only loss of the year.

Favorite defensive player - Mike Reid. You young guys don't understand how dominant Mike was. Our D was incredible and he was a true leader on and off the field.

Favority offensive player - We followed up the 1970 loss to Colorado with another huge loss to Wisconsin. Joe reached down to his third or fourth string QB, a kid named John Hufnagel. and things turned around. Hufnagel had a long career coaching in the CFL. If Joe had retired like a normal man Hufnagel may have replaced him.

Worst loss? Alabama in the Sugar Bowl 1979. If we had a better running back we win the national championship.

Best win? Fiesta Bowl vs. Miami. Pete Giftopoulus, Shane Conlan, and the DBs toughed it out.

What if? What if Michael Robinson had started at QB for more than the one year?

Happy Birthday! Good post, especially the part about your favorite defensive player :D

In the game against TCU, Penn State rushed for nearly 500 yards ... and LB Ed O'Neil returned a punt for a TD.

The Tennessee loss was totally bizarre. The Vols scored on a 70+ fumble return after a long PSU drive, a punt return, and an interception return. The longest TN drive for a TD was 15 yards following another fumble. PSU outgained the Vols by 100+ yards, but had 6 turnovers.

I don't recall a punt hitting a blocker vs TN, but I do remember such a fiasco vs Alabama a decade later.

Hope you have a great day.

I think you are correct about the punt up the ass of the blocker. That was Alabama. I would have to rate the Alabama and Tennessee games, the Colorado game, Michigan last year, and the 6-4 Iowa game as perhaps the worst performances in the history of Penn State.

Now that I recall Bobby Majors, Johnny's brother, murdered us on special teams in the Tennessee game.

1979 - we would have beat Alabama if we had a better running back....?????
We watched different games I guess. Our running back that day played 8 years in the NFL. I don’t think he was the problem.

Running backs don't get stopped for no gain if the OL does it's job.

Suhey was a blocking back with next to no speed. Good player, but I would not have him in our top ten running backs.

I just checked and Guman had a total of 342 yards in his NFL career. He was a blocking back, nothing more, in the pros.

Nothing personal against him, but we win with Curt Warner or DJ Dozier back there. My opinion, not yours.

That 6-4 Iowa debacle that I witnessed included Michael Robinson at QB. He had a wide open receiver in the end zone and threw it up into the Blue Band Tuba Section!
EDIT:
Then Jay got MRob straightened out on his throwing mechanics and we were off to the races in 2005! ;)
