People don't like Zain as our 65kg rep because he isn't a good freestyle wrestler. The Russians are vastly superior at picking teams versus our system.

Our system is fair in that it gives everyone who hasn't won a world medal an equal chance to make the team. But Zain isn't winning a medal at 65kg and that's all that matters.

The Russians don't go into Russian Nationals and overall competitive landscape trying to have the most fair process. They go into the Olympic year looking to have the best team with the best chance at winning gold.

If Sadulaev somehow lost in the Russian National finals, he would still be the selection at 97kg. We will be very, very fortunate to win 3 medals at the Olympics. I'm guessing we win two with no medals at 57, 65, 74, 125 just like 2016.

If that happened to Russian everybody on staff would be fired.
Disagree entirely.

But in fairness, if anyone knows about bad tournament wrestling, it's Missouri.

Well, Missouri has produced Olympic medalists. Still waiting for Penn St. to do the same. Maybe next cycle?

Try again.

Please cite your evidence that 'Zain isn't a good freestyle wrestler'. He's beaten Yianni twice and shut out world #1 Punia 6 months ago. Good lord, I wish I sucked at freestyle as much as Zain.

Zain failed to qualify the weight losing to Agustin Destribats. At world championships, he is 1-2. If Zain was Russian, that would be the end of his career right there. You don't get three world championships to prove yourself.

And beating Bajrang on home soil doesn't mean much.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Somebody let the town drunk out of the bar. Citing an Olympian from the 1920's. Oh you mean Penn St. had a Olympic medalists when black people were not allowed to participate in sports. That's your example?

Let me guess, you think some baseball player from the 1930's was the best ever? When half the globe was banned from competing due to racist laws, it isn't legit. I thought we figured this out.

I'm the town drunk because I know how to google something? And yes, my example of a Penn State wrestler winning an Olympic medal (which is specifically what you referenced) is Katsutoshi Naito, a Penn State wrestler who won an Olympic medal.

As to who the best baseball player ever would be, I'm certainly not an expert but my inclination would probably be to say either Mark Lemke or Ricky Henderson.

Bro - just ignore him. No need to engage with a troll. If it's one thing that HR and BWI posters can agree on is that dude is not welcome.

I'm a troll because I objectively state that Russia is better at selecting teams which is backed up by decades of quantitative data? So despite Zain failing to qualify the weight, going 1-2 at worlds and not having a 65kg medalist for the US since Jamill Kelly, I am the troll for not understanding wrestling.

Got it. Always wondered why cousin picked Penn over Penn St. Starting to bear fruit.

maybe we should just have a public vote for the spots?

Is it just me, or does anytime a Missouri fan pop in here, they behave like a raging DBag with their noses all up in JDen’s crotch ?

I say this as a PSU grad who values the education and experience afforded me there...

I don't think only now understanding why your cousin would choose an Ivy League school over PSU is the brag you seem to think it is.

Nobody hates Zain because he prevented Yianni from moving on. That's just making up s***.

Let's say you are Cael Sanderson planning your season. At 141, you have two guys, A and B. For some reason, A always has B's number in the room. B just can't beat him. However, in every tournament they've both been at, B always wins the tournament, while A never does. In addition, B has a better dual meet record than does A.

Who do you send to NCAAs?
I text CP and ask for his plan.

You’d think a 2X US world team member and 3X NCAA champion would get a bit more respect, but you’re right, one random loss at the world championships should definitely disqualify him from Olympic consideration.

Freestyle and Folkstyle are different sports. No question Zain was an elite folkstyle wrestle. He's one of the best of all-time. But this is freestyle and Zain's elite folkstyle top game has not translated at all to freestyle.

Zain & Brent Metcalf are similar: Two elite folkstyle wrestlers that lack the athleticism and neutral skillset to compete at the highest freestyle level. I personally don't think Yianni has the ability to medal until his neutral game improves. I was the only one who picked McKenna because Joey has elite technique and can win in neutral.

Bajrang trained at Michigan for a month before that match. Under a better coach (Belaglazov) than he'll find anywhere in his home country.

So if "on home soil" counts against Zain there, then it must count for Zain in the freestyle tourneys where he didn't have a month to acclimate.

Bajrang isn't a top 3 guy at the weight, so I don't know the obsession with him.

1.) Haji
2.) Rashidov
3.) Otoguro
4.) Tevanyan
5.) Musukaev
6.) Bajrang

65kg is the most stacked weight in the world. It's why we haven't won a medal there in 15 years.

He's important until he isn't. Whatever.

Everybody knows that freestyle rankings aren't worth the paper they're printed on. We just went thru an NCAA tournament where nobody understood seeds because of the scarcity of matches -- that was like 2-3 years' worth of freestyle matches.

Zain kinda crapped the bed a bit qualifying the weight. And he has had some head scratchers in freestyle just like Metcalf used to. That weight class is traditionally P4P one of the toughest yearly to win on the world stage. Brutal brackets at worlds!

I'd like to see what Yianni can do now although I would be ok if Zain makes it aswell. Both are very talented, I just feel Yianni has a higher ceiling in Free.

Were there Americans with higher ceilings than Metcalf who should have been put on world teams ahead of him even though he was winning the trials?

When it's all said and done, I'll take our selection process, warts and all.

Just recently, stories like Dan Dennis making it in 2016, the Frank vs Pico battle, the Burroughs vs Dake slug fest (match #2 of that series might be my favorite recent non-PSU wrestling match) and others...these matches wouldn't have mattered nearly as much if they were only a data point among many in the decision process.

Only the medalists from the 2019 Worlds in Olympic weights get to wait, includes Burroughs and Snyder.

Medalists in non-Olympic weights are inserted at the semi-finals of the weight they choose, includes Dake and Cox.
Brutal. Simply brutal.
