sometimes we analyze a situation too deeply. IMO the reality is Franklin worked with Donovan every day for 5 years. I think the decision to move in a different direction reflects Franklin's view of Donovan's entire 5 year body of work. If JD spent 3 years at Vandy lighting up the scoreboard I don't think this change would have happened.
If you recall back to when Donovan was hired as PSU OC, a lot of Vandy fans gave their point of view that we would not be happy with JD. There was no suggestion that we were getting a hot young talent. Perhaps Franklin's thought process was that he valued continuity at that point to allow his staff to hit the ground running at PSU moreso than taking on a new OC at that point in time.
So I don't necessarily buy into the debate over whether or not CJF handcuffed Donovan. I don't think it matters because CJF worked with JD for 5 years and certainly has a pretty good understanding of his strengths and weaknesses.
