I am no fan of Donald Trump, but I have to concede that he has done a good job of late in terms of the North Korea situation. I write not because my praise or condemnation of Trump makes any difference, but primarily to note my real surprise at the considerable change in Trump's approach to North Korea, and to wonder if perhaps there is a small chance that the Koreas can finally work out some kind of viable resolution.
Trump has kept his comments regarding ongoing negotiations between North and South Korea to a minimum. That is out of character for him. Even more surprisingly, on the occasions when he has been essentially obligated to say something on the subject (e.g., when directly asked about it in press conferences), he has avoided negative comments about North Korea (e.g., "Rocket Man") and responded with cautious optimism ("There are some potentially hopeful signs," etc.)
I remain skeptical that the North Koreans will in fact be willing to give over their pursuit of fully functional ICBM's, but there is no reason not to wait another month or two and see what results from the negotiations between South and North.
