Getting my 13 year old a TV in his room for his birthday. Was about to call Spectrum to get a service call and thought twice....

My son is super Tech Savvy....I would think he would want YouTube TV or some other service.....any thoughts?

Also considering just getting his room connected (and the garage while they are here for me) and it really has no recurring cost unless I get the box...

If I understand correctly, you currently have a cable provider. Add the TV and buy a streaming stick (Amazon Fire Stick or Roku) for like 40 bucks. You will be able to log on most Apps with a userid/password from cable subscriber without adding a box. Once you have the stick, you can add any apps you like, pay, free, whatever you wish.

Many TVs are smart TVs and have apps built in. You don’t need a streaming stick for those, unless he wants something not included with that TV.

True...I have a smart TV (LG) that I bought before I cut the cord. Wish I had cut the cord prior to buying it, because the LG platform doesn't support anything I want.

Sure, but they all blow nuts.

Look, a 13-year-old kid is going to be able to figure out anything. Get him an Apple TV, Roku, or similar device--subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, and he'll have plenty to watch. IMO, YouTube TV is the best streaming service by far, followed by Fubo (although no ESPN), Hulu Live TV, Vue, Sling, and DirecTV Now a long way off in the rear.

I'm with BB above. I have two 4K LGs, and an old Samsung. Both of my LG's are "smart" and you can download Youtube TV along with many others. You just connect your TV to your Wifi. I also love my Apple TV, if you are an Apple family. In my work offices, we have Apple TV on every TV. You can name them. Then, if you are in somebody's office and want to show them something, you simply connect to their office TV. Takes about five seconds.

Agree. I pay the $5 to ESPN so that covers the rest.

No, they don't all blow nuts. Amazon Prime and Netflix on my <cheap> Samsung Smart TV are flawless.
Plus, 13 year old kid will generally be gaming, not streaming.

Agree....I've got amazon, hulu, netlix, youtube TV and a bunch my daughter downloaded but I don't know what they do. It also has a photo sharing utility but I use apple TV for that.

Let me know how flawless it is when Prime and Netflix update features and your “Smart TV” can’t use them because Samsung never updates the apps. Or when a new service hits the market and your “Smart TV” can’t get it because company A competes with Samsung.

Correct. I have no experience with Apple TV, I would think it would be fine, but Roku is killer for exactly this reason. The apps on "smart" TVs stop getting updated at a point but the Roku will go on and on. Smart TVs, ironically, are dumb. I believe the problem is apps for TVs are actually developed model by model, or at least they were as of several years ago. Which is completely brain-dead, I was very surprised to read that but it would explain how the apps eventually get out of date. Roku has far less models of streaming device than Samsung or anyone else has models of TV.

It could be apps on "smart" TVs have gotten better in regards to being updated but I have seen some apps on "smart" TVs that do indeed suck balls. My brother owns a 55" Vizio and the apps are absolutely horrid.

From my experience and not trying to argue, if you can get an app you like, they all work very well. You just have to make sure the TV supports the app.

I did a ton of research before subscribing to a streaming service. I concluded that the best bang for my buck was PSvue. It carried most of the channels I wanted and it could be used on 5 separate devices at the same time. I also wanted SBTV for local news. My problem was that I needed a new TV the year prior (well, WANTED really). I bought a smart TV without really caring too much about the "smart" features. Once I decided I wanted PSvue & SBTV, I found out the LG platform didn't support either. Not a huge deal, because I just stuck a ROKU on there to get them. Being a novice, I assumed any smart TV/device would be able to support PSvue. I was obviously wrong.

Later, I subscribed to Amazon Prime, which I tend to use more than PSvue. The others in my house use PSvue though.

what does $5 get you? Viewing of all ESPN channels?

I've been thinking of trying Fubo and would be nice to have ESPN for football season.
I get ESPN, ESP2, ESPNU, and ESPNews on YouTube TV along with NBC sports and FoxSports. ESPN app on the smart TV covers ESPN 3 which I did mostly for soccer and days when I cannot find anything on. Every one in a while there is something I want to watch on 3.

so you're referring to a sports package that you can add with YouTube TV? Not a stand alone ESPN app that you can access without another subscription?

I consider myself a tech person. My kids (youngest 17) all picked it up through me and understand devices like breathing.
Each one of them use streaming differently. For youth, YouTube is king. I don't understand the love, but it's just how it is. They will occasionally use YouTubeTV or Netflix, but regular YouTube is what rules this area.
YouTube TV is region specific, and like almost all services has Free Trial.... Use It. See which you prefer. For me it has sports, sports, and more sports. This is basic YT TV, no additional charges.
I have ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, ESPNU, FOX Sports MW, SEC NOW, FOX Sports MW+, FOX Sports North, FOX Sports North +,NBC SN, NBC Sports Chicago, NBC SC+, NBA TV, MLB Central, BTN, BTN +, BTN RunOver, CBS Sports, Golf Channel, Olympic channel, Tennis Channel
Most of those I don't watch, but I rarely ever miss a sporting event I want to watch. I can't even recall the last time that happened.

Streaming is also done in a variety of ways. Most of my Roku/Android/AppleTV boxes are dust collectors. They are very "brand" specific and make you choose from approved apps. Casting is usually our preferred method of streaming. Most smart TVs already allow this, or you can purchase an inexpensive Chromecast (Ultra for 4K)

If any of you have AT&T cellular, they provide an included AT&T Watch TV service with most plans and 1 free premium (HBO for me ...GOT) and it's nice as an alternative.

When we go on trips, I just put the chromecast in my pocket and it will hook up to any TV in hotels etc. Your Cable TV goes with you.

My services include: YT TV, Plex, Netflix, Spotify Family, AT&T Watch TV(free), FloWrestling

A bit off track from the original discussion, but not getting many suggestions from a MN Fishing Forum I posted to. I know this board is much more active and knowledgeable to these types of discussions.

We have a cabin on an island in far Northern MN which is very remote, but many places in the area do have Dish/Direct TV to handle their tv viewing. We would prefer not to go this route, but might have to. We have Verizon and AT and T cell phone coverage, usually a decent 1-2 bars of strength. Seems as though over Holiday weekends when the lake is more crowded our coverage lacks a bit. We used to have a cabin rule of no TV here, but as the kids have gotten older and it's often times just my wife and I, we get tired of all the board games, and well, simply staring at each other, thus we have started streaming tv though our laptop some evenings.

We use our iphones as personal hotspots to capture WiFi on our laptop and connect an older, larger external computer screen to have a larger viewing area. We use our XFinity account to watch the news, taped shows, sports, etc. We have been watching over the last few days and our buffering (dot-dot-dot pauses) has been really annoying, usually every minute or two and then comes back for a minute or two.....perhaps this is due to the combination of fairly low signal strength from phone (1-2 bars) and also maybe the population of folks using the cell towers, especially on busy weekends such as Memorial Day.

I am curious what others might do or suggest in our situation to get better tv and/or streaming results? Would prefer not to do a Direct TV/Dish or some other expensive service as we really don't watch a ton of tv Up North, but would prefer to investigate how we could improve our options and reliability

Thanks for any insight as I have learned over the years, the folks on the board are much smarter than I am!

There's little to nothing you can do to get better reception. One could always buy an amplifier, but if service is so weak that you're only getting one bar, it's not likely to be a significant difference. In any event, even with an amplifier, you're not going to be able to get any decent streaming.

If a lot of TV channels are a must at this place, DirecTV or Dish satellite is the only reliable option (assuming cable isn't available). Otherwise, if you really don't want satellite, just get an amplified OTA antenna.

Sorry I missed this. I get all of those with YouTube TV and then have an additional ESPN $5 package mostly for soccer. Now that most of the Euro leagues are done, I'll probably kill it.

have any of the streaming services figured out:
1. How to save the last channel you were watching
2. How to directly get to a channel by entering a number
3. How to access the saved shows in their 'DVR'

We tried cutting the cable last year and went back to xFinity for the above and

1. MagicJack is incapable of sending or receiving faxes
2. MagicJack is incapable of sending a signal to multiple phones - it will only ring a line directly connected to the MagicJack device
3. 'Typing' with a FireStick or Roku remote is beyond frustrating and even more so when you don't have the lights on in the room

Thanks for the feedback Pennsy, that's what I figured too...

1. Youtube TV on Roku...I hit the down arrow twice on my remote and my last 4 channels appear.
2. Not aware of this on Youtube TV, but it has a guide and a search.
3. Go to my library. The DVR is unlimited. Not an issue at all. I have no idea what you're doing with magic jack as that is a phone service IIRC.

2. MagicJack is incapable of sending a signal to multiple phones - it will only ring a line directly connected to the MagicJack device

I'm not sure what this has to do with cord cutting. But connect your magic jack in the basement where all of your phone wires are in one place. Then connect all of your phones to it through a splitter.

Really? None of the remotes for streaming services have a numerical keypad. I don't want to popup a search window.

I work from home, so I have to have reliable high-speed internet (not an issue in my area), and I need to have 2 phone numbers. One is my cell the other my landline.

Must be a hardware deal. I have a base unit and 4 satellite phones. All 5 ring ring in for me. Just run the base through the magic jack.

This is also an option. I assumed the OP had multiple phones connected to wall jacks in multiple rooms and wanted a cheap solution.

They operate like surfing the web. You can have favorite channels, but they're not numbered.

My intent was not to 'hi-jack the thread'.

Yes, this works fine for that one phone. As soon as you 'split' the MJ feed to multiple phones it stops working... and according to MJ support they don't support 'splitting' to multiple phones. Your base unit is receiving the signal and distributing it to the other handhelds.

This is also an option. I assumed the OP had multiple phones connected to wall jacks in multiple rooms and wanted a cheap solution.

Yes, and MJ does not support doing this. And as soon as you connect a fax enabled device (my multi-function printer) it stops working altogether.

At the next house things will be very different. :)

Yea, my setup is different, but check this out. May help you if you're interested.

None of them have a numerical keypad because you can dictate what channel you want (Apple TV, for example). Honestly, if you're worried about typing in a channel, IPTV probably isn't good for you.

YouTube TV comes with ESPN (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPNews). If you are paying $5 for something, it's another channel not ESPN (Fox Soccer Plus perhaps).

Actually I know what I'm paying for and you're wrong. Yes Youtube TV has those ESPN channels, but tell me which one right now is playing Dutch soccer? Oh...none are, but the ESPN app is. It also had some of the FA Cup matches that were not available on the regular ESPN channels. It covers things also aired on ESPN3. It has online content that those ESPN channels do not always cover and it is not available on YouTube TV.

PSVue has local news on major networks. I get one channel each on all 4 major networks in Philly. What I miss are the secondary networks like PHL 17 or WPIX or WOR New York.

Got it. I missed your follow up post where you said it was an app on the TV. I thought you were saying you were paying for ESPN on YouTube TV.
