All the Pirates accomplished against the Cards

As a Cardinals fan, I never understood why the Pirates got so excited about that series... It was at PNC park so you'd hope they win the series, and not even halfway through the season, talk about a lot of hype for nothing. Buccos getting what they deserved now, raise it lol

And then some......
Yep. This was the fear I had with all the road games and the Cards being at home for the next couple of weeks. As good as the Bucs' record is (was), I've always had this feeling that they've been running through raindrops. Even when they're winning, they never seem to be clicking on all cylinders, and when the lose they look awful. No way to spin this series, it was abominable.

gone in a flash.
How do they come out of the break and pitch Morton, Worley and Locke ? Yea, I know Liriano was scratched yesterday after warming up, but this team needs its 3 stud starters in a big way if they expect to contend for the division title vs. the Cardinals. Cole, Burnett and Liriano are capable of shutting down any lineup in baseball when healthy and cranking along. Time to get back in the saddle and ride their big guns again.

Well, you're transferring fan reaction to the team itself. The players and management kept a pretty even keel during and after that series. So, your last comment is pretty much moronic.

Hang in there, Pirate fans. It was a terrible series, however, all is not lost. The Cardinals can still be had, there's a lot of baseball to play yet.

Gulf, Locke did pitch pretty well today and deserved better. Morton's pitching wasn't great, but by no means was it horrible. Just shitty defense (as usual) and no run support. And Worley, there's a reason the Phillies gave up on him. Maybe they were saving Cole and AJ for the Royals. They'll need them.

Criminy, some of you are such wimps. Yes, Liriano is now a concern, yes losing Jordy - if it's for an extended period - could be a big problem.

Still, they've bounced back big after bad weekends already this season (e.g., the hot run after the Nat's series). Tough schedule the next 10 days or so, but I'm glad the team is, w/o doubt, not nearly as defeatist as some of its fans.

The team (whoever is on the field at any one time) needs to focus on playing each game as well as they can. What happens with the Cardinals or the Cubs or any other team can't be controlled. With the injuries piling up and the unreliable play of Alvarez and Polanco the next four weeks will determine what happens with this team. If things don't go well the real chase will just be to make the playoffs.

I've said all season and I am sticking with it. This team is at best the first wildcard but I believe the Cubs will pass them and the Pirates will need to hold off the Giants and Mets for a road one game play-in at Wrigley.

Could be 2012 all over again. 61-48 at the end of July and under .500 by the end. I hope not, I am not expecting that but it won't surprise me if it happens.

I just don't understand all the doom & gloom. I got hammered here a little while back saying I didn't think the Pirates were World Series contenders, yet. However, I can't believe you guys are giving up on them so easily. 1 bad series is not the end of the world. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, the Pirates often do not do well @ Miller Park. I do believe the Pirates are playoff bound. Have some faith.

I'm not concerned. There are still a lot of games left. It's disappointing. It's not disastrous. As I keep saying, I would obviously like to win the division, but as long as we make the playoffs, and we will, anything can happen.

Beginning of the end for the Buccos...have hit the wall.
At worst, after today and despite the sweep, the Bucs will be 5 back in the lost column. There are 71 games left. You may be right, but I doubt it.

If you live in Pittsburgh you've seen this act before
If you've lived in any city that plays baseball you've seen this before. It's 162 games, with ups and downs, winning streaks and losing streaks. If you want to say the Pirates are done, out of it, whatever, it's your right. I guess that's what posting on a message board is all about. They still have the 3rd best record in baseball so I think you're just making yourself look foolish, but that's your right too.

I couldn't be less concerned. And all that was gained can never be lost, because if we hadn't gained that, we'd be on the cusp of being 8.5 or 9.5 back.

Reason I'm not the least bit concerned: we just ran out Morton, Locke and Worley for this series. If we got swept on Cole, Liriano and Burnett, I'd be bothered. Bad series, but there are always are in 162 games. No big deal.

I'll add the only thing that does concern me is that Mercer could very well be done for the year. You go from very good D w/ Mercer at SS and Kang at 3B to below average D w/ Kang at SS and S-Rod at 3rd. That does hurt.

The biggest problem right now is Alvarez: He can't field his position, and is on pace for a record setting amount of errors. In addition he is a power hitter who has 9 less Home runs than the Dodgers LEAD OFF hitter, and you cannot play him against left handers, or hit him clean up. The Pirates need a first baseman who isn't a liability and who isn't an automatic out with RISP.

Yeah I expect they try to address that before the deadline. So glad they didn't give in to pressures to extend Pedro when he led the league in HRs. I won't really miss El Toro when he's gone. I'm excited for the Josh Bell era, but to give him time to figure out defense, the Bucs need a stop-gap between now and middle of next season at 1st.

I'll trade Pedro & Tabatta for a bag of chips and a stair-master!!

I don't know if we'll see Bell as soon as next year, but yeah I'm ready for that also. The Mercer thing could be a major problem. If he is out, barring a trade (Aramis?), I wonder if they'd think about bringing Hansen up and playing him at second and moving Walker to 1st. That's out there, but it would be interesting.

Couple of things. First of all, Pedro Alvarez is a frickin' millstone. I can't wait till that stiff is on the next Greyhound out of town. Alvarez has exactly one skill - hitting for power. Which he ain't doing. That makes him completely useless. If you're going to hit .230 with an OBP under .300 and field your position like you're picking up live hand grenades, you damn well better hit 40 home runs. Otherwise, GTFO because you are KILLING the club.

I don't care how bad Josh Bell's glove is. How bad can he possibly be to not be a significant upgrade over Alvarez? Does he have one arm or something? Is he missing a foot? The Pirates ragging on his D sounds like to me the usual propaganda.

Finally, just what in thee blue hell was Hurdle thinking giving a 'scheduled rest day' to McCutcheon? He just came off the All-Star Break. What does he need a day off for? ESPECIALLY after losing the first two and looking bad doing it. GET YOUR BEST HORSES OUT THERE!

They better get hot in a big hurry. There are a lot of dogs after those bones.

It's a long season, boys and girls. Three road games in a very long season. If this leads to losing nine out of ten, then it is a different story. But for now it is just a little hiccup. Bucs could be considered red-hot again by Thursday. I'd be more concerned about the front office adding some help for the second half. As a Yankee fan, I'd love to see a rematch of the '60 series. I don't think either team is going to get there -- Yanks are too old and Bucs are too thin -- but stranger things have happened.

To be fair, this is the view of the scouts I've heard talking about Bell, as well as Keith Law's recent trip through Altoona to watch the Curve.
I believe you. The scouts should follow Alvarez around for a week or so, and let them get an eyeful of the slop we're putting up with in Pittsburgh. They can do a side-by-side comparison.
