All-Time All-America team for college football's 150th anniversary

PSU has had much better teams but if you make an all time Pitt Team it is very good add Dorsett, Marino, Ricky Jackson, Russ Grimm and Mark May and Pitt would be a strong team. Teams that would be stronger Alabama, maybe USC??

Congrats to Pitt. A bunch of great individual talents, and a long history of team failure. Does that fit on a key chain?

Interesting to see Jack Ham make the second team. IMO, he wasn't even the best LB in our history (at least in terms of his college days).

Also......how does Barry Sanders not make this team?

I believe he was considered to be the 2nd best LB on his own team to Dennis Onkotz. That's not putting Ham down...Onkotz was great.

That's a heck of a team - can't really argue with any of them.

An even harder pick - the greatest CF player of all-time off that list. If a person is open minded, you just about have to go with Charles Woodson. Think about it. A two way player, Heisman winner and led his team - mighty Michigan - to the NC. No other player on that list can even come close to his resume. The no. 1 player for the winningest program of all-time. As good as it gets.

What about a dude like Charlie Ward - Ditches football for NBA... Deon.. or Bo Jackson.. I just got thinking about insane athletes... Woodson was a phenom... his resume is crazy

Agreed. Not only is an all-time Pitt team better than an all-time PSU team, it's probably better than almost anyone. It just lacks depth. But really... Marino, Dorsett, Curtis Martin, Antonio Bryant, Larry Fitzgerald, Mike Ditka, Fralic, Mark May, Russ Grimm, Mark Stepnoski, Jimbo Covert. That is high end college and pro talent. And that's just offense! Not as many on D, but Ricky Jackson, Hugh Greene, Aaron Donald, Derrelle Revis, that's some top shelf talent. Lot of other tough guys on D that always gave us fits like Sunseri, Olslavsky, Bill Maas, and Randy Holloway. It's amazing they didn't beat us more. Thank you, Carson Long!

Randy white. Played DE at Maryland. Yes he’s listed as a DT in MD program but that’s because MD used old terminology. Randy played outside, the guys inside were called Defensive Guards.

It's not amazing at all. Pitt has been mediocre for a very long time. A team that loses 30 of the last 40 games against you is not causing you fits. More like blind squirrel territory.

Yeah, it's an incredible array of talent.

But just a personal preference......I'll take the Todd Blackledges and the DJ Doziers and their national titles over NFL stars Curtis Martin and his 3-8 seasons or Larry Fitzgerald and his Continental Tire Bowl. :)

Anthony Munoz made second team on the All-Time 150 CFB team and Munoz never even made All-American while in college at USC. He was injured that much. Granted he became on the all-time great offensive linemen in NFL history, but shouldn't someone that made the second team on the All-Time 150 CFB team at least have been an All-American?

If you want to compare Pitt's all-time team vs. Penn State's all-time team here you go. Yes Pitt had some of cfb's all-time greats, but Pitt's LBs and secondary would definitely be their Achilles heel and Penn State's front seven is as good as any other school in college football history.

Wolve he's on the first team defense.

CB Charles Woodson, Michigan (1995-97)
Interceptions: 18 | Tackles: 162 | Total TDs: 6
The Wolverines' 20-14 victory over rival Ohio State encapsulated Woodson's Heisman Trophy-winning campaign in 1997. He set up Michigan's only offensive touchdown with a 37-yard catch in the first quarter, scored on a 78-yard punt return in the second, and intercepted a pass in the end zone in the third. Woodson's versatility and big-play ability allowed him to become the first primarily defensive player to win the Heisman since the sport moved to a two-platoon system in the early 1960s. As a junior, Woodson had eight interceptions with 43 tackles, while catching 11 passes for 231 yards with one score. A two-time All-American, he won the Heisman, Walter Camp Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Award and Jim Thorpe Award in 1997. Most importantly, he helped the Wolverines win their first national title since 1948.

True story, Hugh Green committed to another school and later flipped to Pitt. Years later he apologized to the coach, said he received more money to go to Pitt than he did on his signing bonus for the Bucs.

Granted he didn't play for the winningest program of all time;however,Chuck Bednarik was a man among boys. Dad's boss owned the Eagles. Saw him as a kid for Penn. He was like superman on the field, continued as an Eagle. Last 60 minute player in the NFL as a Center and LB. He and Jim Brown were the 2 alpa males in the NFL in the Fifties and Sixties.

Bednarik was just a bad dude on the field back when they worked other jobs in the offseason

Really just a "best of the last 60-70 years", and slanted toward more modern players (as one might expect). I mean Red Grange, Jim Thorpe missing?? Mr Inside and Mr Outside? I get why no OJ, though.

My pro-PSU bias aside, I think Hugh Green was the best college defensive player I ever saw in person. He was dominant on the field. He was so far better than any other D players in his last 2 or 3 years at Pitt, and it wasn't really close. Quick, tough, instinctive.... that guy would have looked beautiful in Blue and White!

All that said, I don't doubt the story you told. Back in the 70s, Pitt was ok with cash for players. Story I heard was that when Johnny Majors came to Pitt in '73(?), he knew he had to compete with Penn State in recruiting, and that Joe didn't cheat. His philosophy was that he would cheat like hell for one year, and that would even the playing field talent-wise, and then he wouldn't have to after that. The freshman class of 1973 at Pitt was filled with outstanding players, led by Tony Dorsett, and they won the NC in '76 when they were all seniors. But, no one really thought the cheating stopped after that one year. Made for some fun battles every November, though. Pitt had a nice little ~10 year period of good-to-very good (and one great year) football.
Then.... poof!

Peyton Manning might be the most out of place there. I mean, he’s the guy with a college career that was defined by the games he didn’t win. Maybe if they had Tee Martin as first team?

Green was an afterthought and had next to no offers. Rooster Jones was the highly recruited player at the time that Pitt was recruiting, and coincidentally found Green while recruiting Jones.
