American dual thread - Feb 21

Davis and Kasak are both short of the RPI 15-match minimum. Kasak is 13-1, he'll get that. Davis is 8-3, needs 4 matches at B10s, probably will get it but guaranteed.
Interesting scenario. Say Davis got a bye, he’s likely better off getting four matches and taking third at B1Gs than he is three and taking second.

Yeah, my phrasing was incomplete. I knew Davis was several short, but I was talking about the regulars who wrestled today. My (very) bad

He won't get a bye. The top 3 seeds will almost certainly be 1 Ayala (undefeated in conference), 2 Byrd (only loss to Ayala), 3 Brown (only loss to Byrd). Guessing Van Dee gets the 4, Davis gets the 5 on the basis of their H2H, plus Davis having beaten Shawver and Bouzakis.

Even if he did, I'm not sure that's actually better. It's a tradeoff -- he'd lose RPI 10 pts to everyone, but it would only matter for a few. But if he finishes 3rd, then he loses Conference Finish 10 pts to a few guys he might otherwise be seeded ahead of.

Or Davis could just forfeit the opener and go straight to consis ... wait a minute, his dad isn't the head coach. Never mind.

Okay, I knew they’re be the difference in placement points but wasn’t sure if it would outweigh 0 for RPI

Hard to say without doing the seeding math for the comparable guys (say, similar coaches ranks and conference 2-3 finishes). Which I'm too lazy to do.

NCAA seeding correlates most closely with Coaches' Rank. Cluster guys with similar ranks, and chip away at the other categories.

Not having an RPI might also mean a lower Quality Wins score. That's also hard to tell without a deep dive into various wrestlers' schedules.

Flying out of Harrisburg this morning and a guy in the gate area has an American Wrestling pullover on. I struck up a conversation and it turns out he is their starting heavyweight's (William Jarrell) Dad. Jarrell didn't wrestle last night, because why else? Math. He's going to a tournament this weekend.

Just looked it up. He's 20-9, 68.97% win percentage. I assume he'll try to get a couple wins there and try to finish no worse than one below the auto-qualifier spot at EIWA, with a 70% win percentage.

Just spoke with him again. This tournament is even more than that. He can get the conference an auto-qualifier, which would give him one more spot of breathing room at EIWA. He currently sits at 4th in EIWA, and they'll likely get 4 AQs.
