OK boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for a little Monday morning housekeeping here in the Lions Den!
Who's excited?
(EDIT: Disregard this. Entirely.)
We'll start with a small news item that I slid into a thread last night, but probably would be more appropriate or helpful here. And that is to say, the feedback I'm getting is that it's unlikely for Herb Hand to leave. Auburn might pursue if the opening occurs, so there's some legitimacy there (old relationship between Hand and Malzahn). But at present, again, the feedback is that the departure appears unlikely.
(EDIT: OK, we're back.)
And now, here's where we get to the fun part. Bob Shoop is gone. He's not the greatest human in the world. He's also not the worst human in the world! His players unequivocally loved him, and he had a ton of respect throughout the Lasch Building. Brent Pry is also really well liked among the players and staff, and especially James Franklin! So that's a little bit of bad news, followed by a little bit of good news!
I'm here to provide a bit of perspective that, take it or leave it, is overwhelmingly true:
Just about every college football program across the country is in a constant tenuous state. College athletics in general are tied to the notion of quick and dramatic turnover. That it extends to the coaching circus should be no surprise, and should also not be taken as either 1) the worst thing in the world or 2) the best thing in the world. It's neither, but it is life.
Which is what James Franklin had to deal with this weekend. As of Friday, Franklin had a perception problem with his program, and he'd acknowledge as much. Perception problems are not issues that you can't fight back against, though, and he did so resolutely by naming Pry defensive coordinator quickly and presenting it as a positive. Ryan's great work in collecting recruiting reactions this weekend suggests that no monumental shakeups in the Class of 2016 are likely as a result of the transition. You can't step into the ring if you're not ready to take a punch, and know how to punch back.
All of this directs me to my final point here.
This is college football, and it's supposed to be fun. No doubt, the internet tough guy syndrome can get the best of us during times of conflict, but we have a generous grace period and a long leash in how we moderate this forum. Well, the grace period for this particular issue has ended. Have your conversations, be respectful to each other even in disagreement, agree to disagree when it's clear there is no resolution in sight, and have a little fun. That, or take a time out and watch the next few series from the sideline, if you catch my drift.
