And the next player to verbal is .......

Would love for that to happen. He is a Derrick Williams/Justin King "type" player ( no, not saying he IS Williams or King, just that type of player).....can potentially take it to the house every time he touches the ball. That said, this is currently a Penn State/Auburn battle, with Georgia a close third. ---Problem is, one of his best friends just committed to Auburn, and Another friend that he goes to HS with, has a father who is an Auburn alum ( and part of the HS football program).....so, I'm pretty sure there's some lobbying going on. ----If the shoe were on the other foot, I'm sure Penn State would work that angle as well.......but as a fan, it's troublesome. -----Fingers crossed.

Brendan Ferns said Sunday that he was down to WVU and Penn State....and would make an announcement in the next 2 weeks. Many analysts have said that they were very surprised by how PSU has raced up his board (his brother plays for WVU and he is from SE Ohio near West Va). Most had him as a WVU lean, but now several are "crystal balling" him to PSU, so the next one might be Ferns...

All of his most recent CBs are to WVU. Including ones from some guys I really trust.

Not so sure about that based on his comments - see hotlinked article below with embedded video:

Penn State target Brendan Ferns down to Lions and WVU; what happened to Ohio State and when could four-star LB decide?

Ferns made some very specific comments about choosing a school, and eliminating others (namely home-state tO$U), based on his preferred major - Petroleum Engineering. Both PSU and WVU offer the major, but PSU is a "world-renowned" PE School Internationally - not even remotely a contest between the two schools in that regard.

BTW, you have to love what Coach Franklin & Co told him about putting all his eggs in the NFL basket.....NFL for most stands for "not for long" and he should place as much, if not more focus on choosing any school, including PSU, for the education he will get relative to what he is looking for as he should on playing football. Kid sounds like he really has his head screwed on right and would fit the PSU culture in regards to excellence in all endeavors, not just football.

FWIW, that interview was from back in June.

I read that article, but his last 7 CBs are to WVU and I didn't want to give 247 guys advertising but Wiltfong and Fitz are included in that and they get PSU recruits right a lot.

Yep, I knew that, but he made comments on Sunday, 8/16, which affirmed that he will make an announcement prior to the start of St. Clairsville's season (St. Clairesville, OH is directly across the river from Wheeling, WV) which begins August 28th -- hence all the stories featuring his comments and that he will announce for PSU or WVU in the next two weeks. Here is a link to what is effectively a hometown paper for Ferns, the MetroNews of West Virginia out of Mornantown -- story was written the day after his comments, Monday 8/17, and they sound somewhat skeptical that his brother transferring to WVU from Michigan really means all that much (and Ferns himself has said in prior interviews that people are making a way bigger deal out of his brother being at WVU than it really is for him) - here's the hotlink:

I'm not sure if we will take Ferns and Hansford but I feel like we will get 1 of them. All in all this will cement a Top 10 Class which will become the norm for Franklin and Co.

Yes, next to make a decision . Next for PSU, Pryts. I watched Ferns' interview and he lit up talking about playing with his brother and his parents not having to split to watch 2 schools.

Interesting, because Ferns himself has been quoted in multiple interviews in the past saying that his brother being a WVU is NOT a big factor in his decision. In fact in the June Interview I linked, he states that the combination of being able to play at the highest level while pursuing a degree in Petroleum Engineering are the biggest factors for him. Has said several times that where his brother is playing is not a factor.

Here is an article from scout posted a couple days - see hotlink below (and following excerpt from article):

Ferns Down To Penn State And West Virginia

From the article:

******************************************************************
He has visited both schools often, and has stated that education is going to play a big part in his decision. With the oil industry exploding in the Ohio Valley, Ferns is looking to major in petroleum engineering and both schools offer excellent programs in that field.
******************************************************************

Based on that criteria, I would give the advantage to PSU, because contrary to what the article says, PSU's PE Degree is lightyears more valuable than the same degree from WVU (PSU probably has as many PE's Internationally as any University in the world and is a recognized as one of the innovators of the major a long, long time ago) - that is not to say that he will choose PSU, but based upon his own statements, and stated criteria, it would not surprise at all if he choose PSU. In fact, the mere fact that PSU was announced as a finalists with glowing remarks about the emphasis PSU and Coach Franklin put on his desire to get a PE Degree is the REAL SURPRISE -- prior to that announcement, the ever-vaunted "247 Crystal Ball Brigade" had tO$U the likely destination with 35% predicting he would go to tO$U, than WVU slightly behind tO$U also at 35% and then PSU with only 14% predicting PSU....so much for all the "inside information" the Crystal Ball displayed LMFAO. Don't believe me? Here see for yourself because 247 is still predicting the kid is going to tO$U despite the fact that he just explicitly eliminated them with his own mouth! LMFAO, see link below:

Brendan Ferns's Crystal Ball Predictions
They Crystal ball projections have swung mightily over the summer. OSU used to be 70 some percent. Then when he eliminated them we jumped to 40 some percent in second and lately it was WVU that climbed up to tie OSU while we regressed back to 15%. The remaining OSU picks are from people who have not updated their guess from awhile back.

In other words, the "Crystal Ball" projections were worthless and were pure guesses that had ZERO to do with his actual thinking in regards to his decision. I believe that was my precise point.

He had a great visit back in March. Hasn't been back since. Kept saying he was going to. That is the main reason I doubt he picks PSU.

Oh okay, I'm just going by what he has actually said, which is where his brother is playing is not going to really factor into his decision. His decision is going to be based upon the combination of the desire to play at the highest level while obtaining a PE Degree at an elite school within that field of study. Given that the vast majority were predicting tO$U and almost nobody was predicting PSU BEFORE HE ELIMINATED tO$U and named PSU as a finalist, I would say that speaks volumes as to how much "the experts" really understood his ACTUAL PERSONAL DECISION-MAKING PROCESS (rather than their own made up belief as to what his decision-making process really came down to). Based on what he has actually SAID about his decision-making process, I wouldn't count PSU out given the quality of PSU's PE School and the fact that PSU's class appears that it will be a Top 10 national class.

Well look, I'd love for him to pick PSU. I hope he does. I just don't think it's going to happen. I was really wrong on Colon so maybe I am here too. And you are right in that the school he describes when talking about his ideal school is Penn State, but he hasn't been back and has been to WVU many times.

I'm not trying to argue with you Bushwood, I probably agree with you more than most on this site, but in this case I just don't think we are getting this recruit. It would be a pleasant surprise.

I have to think Franklin is just giving all of these last few guys as much space and time as possible. It appears as though we "could" sign almost all of those still in play? In short, there is no real rush.
Certainly as fans we want them all ASAP.

Yes, next to make a decision . Next for PSU, Pryts. I watched Ferns' interview and he lit up talking about playing with his brother and his parents not having to split to watch 2 schools.

I watched this interview and reached the same conclusion. Very different demeanor when talking about family. That's the deciding factor in this one. 17 year-old kids are generally more about the heart than the head. I think the only reason it has taken this long is because he comes across as an intelligent sort (no comment on the accent) and knows at some level that PSU's academics, particularly in the major he wants, are vastly superior to anything at WVU. But getting a top 100 national recruit to think about ten years from now is an uphill struggle at best.

Just a thought... It appears that WV may be the team to beat for Ferns, based on no recent visits, no Mom visits etc.

However, if Petroleum Engineering is his focus, you wonder if playing the Pegula card might help. There are likely strict restrictions on personal contacts during recruiting.

But perhaps the knowledge that PSU has a multi-billionaire backer, who made his billions in the Northeastern oil and gas industry may be good for the family to consider.

If his decision is actually based on his major, then it's a no-brainer...PSU. If his Mom & Dad want an easy drive on Saturdays so that they can take pictures of their son's looking cute in matching uniforms, then it's WVU.

I think it's Pryts by Labor Day. Not sure where PSU stands with Hudson, as he did postpone his announcement but that was before the resurgent Pryts interest. As for Hansford, Nixon, Hamlin, Fuller et al., I expect all of them to take at least a few official visits and wouldn't count on hearing anything until October or later.

Is Pryts being recruited as a safety or a linebacker? At 6'3 205 he could certainly grow into the outside linebacker spot and that seems to be more of a need based on the current roster and the loss of Kelly.

Strong rumor is that unless PSU strikes out with most of the remaining targets that there is not room in the class for Hudson

Hansfòrd is going to drag things out. He really likes ND and is far from a PSU lock.

According to one of the other PSU sites, Ferns just pushed back his decision until he takes one more visit to Happy Valley. I really think if WVU was the place, he'd have ended it by now.

My guess is Pryts is the next commit.

I hadn't seen that yet. If true that is great news on Ferns and I would certainly change my take on him.

Does anyone here think we land Hamlin? Some people thought he may have been a "silent verbal" after the bash.

I don't think he's a silent verbal, but that picture of him with all the recruits makes me think we definitely have a great chance. And I think he really likes Penn State, but I think he likes OSU and ND a lot too. Lols at Pitt who thinks he likes them.

He WAS the only one in that picture not currently commited to Penn State. I really hope we can lock him up!
