Another top-10 Beer List for your discussion

We'll, I've seen worse to be honest. A bunch of IPA's then a stout and Bourbon Barrel Stout. In beer geek circles, Elder and Heady were once big deals. Now you have a bunch of stuff people chase like Trillium, Other Half, and countless others that the mainstream will never try or ever hear of.

For shelf beers, I could drink Victory at Sea as my go to winter beer and be happy. Founders Sumatra Brown Ale is better in my opinion than Breakfast Stout and easy to obtain as well. For summer beers, I prefer Gumballhead to Zombie Dust if you are talking Three Floyds.

Remove the Stouts and Porters and I'm happy. I used to be a big hop head but now I'm finding I like it scaled back. Having recently been to the Czech Rep. and tried some of Budvar's unfiltered lagers I'm changing my tune. Anymore a Victory Pilner, Stella Artois or Pilsner Urquell hits the spot.

The only trouble with craft beers today is that everything is an IPA or is hopped like an IPA. Even when that's not the style. A lot of the craft Koelsches are over-hopped for the style.

Boy do I agree with that. Koelsches should not be over hopped.
I looks like the "over hopping of EVERYTHING" is finally nearing its end.
The new big thing is sours, everyone and everything is making a "sour" or aging in a boubon or wine barrel.
But bottom line is I am glad all these beers are available now, so much better when you could only get Bud and Miller.
I'm still a Hefe. guy but do like a good IPA every now and then.

Add a Yuengling Lager and a summer Shandy to Rocklion's list and I am good. I will say with all the drinkable $20/90 point wine around I drink much less beer than I used to.

Yesterday I had the good fortune to enjoy an Elk Creek Pilsner, they only have it around for a few weeks every year. It was delicious.

Pilsners and Lagers for me, an Oatmeal stout every winter but I seldom go off my reservation.

Once you acquire the taste for the hops of a good IPA, you want nothing else. That is how I have gotten. I still enjoy other beers but I do love the hops. I was in California for 10 days recently and enjoyed many of the west coast IPAs

The fruity IPA is another really trendy thing. Some are good (Grapefruit Sculpin -- though overpriced as it is, 21st Amendment Blood Orange), some, meh.

I do love me an IPA and am partial to black IPAs (21st Amendment Back in Black) and black lagers (Schwarzbier) but a good refreshing pale lager is nice this time of year. Flying Dog Numero Uno is a solid summer beer.

I cut my teeth on Ballsst Point Sculpin when I moved to SD. I have grown tired of it. I agree 10000%, I just can't stomach Yeungling.

I love the west coast IPAs. So many to choose from. SD has so many great options. Big fan of Alpine Duet and Deschutes Fresh Squeezed.

Grapefruit Sculpin is mighty tasty. Also my compadre, MaconNitt, brought back some Terrapin Hopsecutioner, good stuff at 7.5 abv. Really liking Schoeffenhofer, a grapefruit radler. 50/50 blend of grapefruit and unfiltered hefeweizen. Only 2.5abv and a good thirst quencher on a hot day The Mrs. is partial to Ithaca Flower Power, another tasty IPA.

Many many moons ago I played soccer in a league with college kids, retired pros from various levels of comptition( Europeans that were old ) and the old German guys after every match would drink pitchers of Dark German beer cut with Wink soda, they called it Dink. Thirst quencher for sure. I thought it was weird at the time ( late 70s )

Germans like to mix their beer with about anything. Sprite, Coke, friggin FANTA, various juices, etc.

The first time I ever heard of a shandy was on my honeymoon in Bermuda. We met a couple from Peru. The husband was British and would mix his beer with 7Up. The shandy's original name was a Shandygaff. Hmm, sound familiar?

The original Radler name was Radlermass (cyclist liter). A German sports drink for cyclists. The first Gatorade maybe?

A while ago when this same topic came up I said San Diego and craft beer is like New York and Pizza. You can trip and fall into a doorway and find a great beer.

With Coke, it's a "diesel".....

One mix I do miss is the half cola/half orange soda they do in Germany. But I don't drink soda much anymore (sugar).

To each his own, which is a positive aspect of beer. I like brown and amber ales. Viva Newcastle Brown Ale.

I agree with your Mrs. Flower Power is my go to IPA of choice. As for the Sculpins, my favorite is the pineapple...blends great with the hops.

Craft beer is a wonderful thing...far too many choices out there to keep up, and a whole lot of it is shit, but still better than the days when Bud/Miller/Coors were the only games in town.

Speaking as a guy who has a fridge full of heady topper. This is such a strange list, to mix high end rare beers with mainstream crap I can get at the grocery store.

P.S. Heady Topper is brewed by a Penn State grad!

I never got the watermelon craze. Every "watermelon" beer I've had (granted, not many) has had zero watermelon taste.

Perhaps the NLC can assuage the Heady Topper brewer to supply beer for tailgating?? My son brought me some back last year from a hiking trip to Vermont. Tasty brew

+1. You got that right. I like the founders all day IPA for my session drinking. A lot of local small shops are doing these hazy IPA's now and they are wonderful. I think its wheat that gives it the hazy look, along with great citrus flavors to match the hoppiness.

Founders probably has the best session IPA. Firestone Walker has a good one, too.

The best beer I've had remains Boulevard's Rye on Rye. A lot better than KBS, which I found to be terrible overhyped. Don't get me wrong, a good beer, but man, should have named it Jabrill Peppers.

The head stoner at Tired Hands is making a small fortune from the milkshake IPA which one ups the notion of infusing fruit into IPA's by also adding lactose sugar. So now you get to spend $25 for a four pack of his strange but beautiful sugar water. The lemmings line up every week for hours to buy it though.

Agree with this for the most part.....unless it's 90+ degrees and I'm on a golf course, which may be the only time I'll defer to a pilsner. Otherwise, the variety of good IPAs out there now is beer heaven.

Over the weekend I sampled a Blue Mountain Brewery ale aged in bourbon barrels. Although not an IPA, this was absolutely excellent.

Anyone remember a citrus beer back in the 70's called I believe "Hops and Gator"? It was awful, but for some reason, I am now really liking those grapefruity flavors IPAs!

Hop n' Gator was not a citrus beer. It was a mixture of malt liquor and Gatorade, done, as mentioned by another poster, by Pittsburgh Brewing.

Yea I've had 1, maybe, that I kind of liked. Same with the Blueberry craze a few summers ago.
That being said I do like the Linenkugels Summer Shandy.:D
My favorites though are pretty much anything from Russian River, those guys just know how
to brew beer.
Damnation Ale and Pliny the Younger are 1 and 2 on my beer list of choice.
Too bad they are so hard to get on the east coast.:(

I am going to get crucified for saying this ... but at a friends house this weekend had some of Costco/Kirkland micro beer made by a micro brewery in WI and for $19.99/case I have to say not too bad. Variety case of ale IPA etc for the price point I was quite surprised in a good way

Their beers are basically Gordon Biersch or Saranac, depending on where you are, so that's not at all terrible.

Kirkland brand stuff is just re-labeled from somewhere else, they aren't making their own. I'm not familiar with their beer, but I've long heard their vodka is essentially Grey Goose for a fraction of the price. It wouldn't surprise me at all to know their beer is also known to be good.

Guinness draft is the beer you've been practicing for. No fruit - it tastes like beer. What a novel concept. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

Grapefruit Sculpin....awesome lawnmower beer. But....if you want to keep the craft beer industry going, one has to stay away from the brands that have been bought by the majors. They cannot afford to lose the massive brand equity in brands like Bud, Lite, etc and have impairments on their sheets. The quiet way to accomplish that is acquisition of good brands that need wider distribution, negotiated lowered costs of goods and ultimately lowering the cost of something like Sculpin. By doing to, Sculpin's price drops at retail....on purpose, so that craft beers price gets muddled and sits alongside "mass" brands. That pressures the craft to lower.

It's not the same as Home Dept vs local hardware store where price erosion and completion drives out the LHS. This is insidious by devaluing the craft price through the acquisition.

In no way at all am I begrudging the guys like Ballast Point who turn a garage dream into an actual 1Billion dollar payday. But now they have their dream. It's up to me to try and rebuff AnBev and the others from screwing up the rest of the market with the new found power.

Meanwhile....Sip of Sunshine battles Heady Topper in my fridge regularly.... with some Tree house sprinked in.
