I lived in Tener Hall as a Freshman, and McKean as a soph and junior. So basically I was an East Halls dorm rat for all but my senior year, when I lived in Laurel Glen and the scurvy bastards took my $400 security deposit into bankruptcy with them in the Spring. Of course, given the damage we may have ( I am having a Mark Dambly moment) done to the apartment, perhaps that security deposit was a goner anyway. :)

So, fess up: were you a dorm rat, a Greek, or a Mary Tyler-Moore wannbe apt dweller?

Stuart my first year, Beam my following two years (wore out the nets at the basketball courts right outside my window), then rented a place near Laurel Glen for a semester before I left. I lived with my sister and a married couple who had a three legged dog named Alvin, which was against the lease (his being a dog, not his having only three legs). Lovely shaggy dog. One time the landlord came to the door and I hid the dog. "Do you have a dog here?" "No, no dog here." "Then what's that I hear barking?"

Junior year Beam Hall.
Senior year apartment at 522 E College. Boy was this a hike to Chambers in the dead of Winter.

Shunk (Pollock Area) as a freshman. Headed to fraternity row as a soph, but had a bad feeling about partying and flunking out. Late in contacting housing, so I ended up in the Nittany dorms. Last two years in town

Two years in West Halls and two years in downtown apartments. I did the whole rush thing my freshman year and realized living with 20 or 30 people in the same house didn't appeal to me. To each his own.

Lived in Beaver Hall for two years, they took my security deposit also and that was not because they went bankrupt. I think they took money everytime the elevator broke which was weekly. (Fires in the bathrooms, broken marble between urinals, etc also cost a bit). I then moved into my Fraternity for the last two years. All of it was awesome. I remember kegs in the dorms. I guess those days are gone...

Beaver as a freshman, two years in a fraternity house, senior year in an apartment

I lived in East Halls freshman and sophomore year Fall 76 through Spring 78 - Potter House, Snyder Hall. Then moved to Briarwood apartments junior year. Rich Milot lived above directly above me and Keith Dorney was in the same building, so I used to see them and some of the other football players from the Sugar Bowl team quite a bit.

We got our entire security deposit back because we fixed what damage we had ourselves. I doubt that Milot got his back because he had his bachelor's party in his apartment with a good part of the football team and they decided to play tackle football in the apartment that evening. We actually saw our ceiling deform under the pressure of the game. Woke up then next morning with a bunch of broken furniture on the ground outside our ground floor apartment. Talked to his roommate who told us there was not an intact piece of furniture left in the apartment and of course there as a bit of damage to the apartment itself.

Senior year we lived in Imperial towers. What damage we had we fixed. However, I remember they dinged us on our security deposit for a couple of things that were pre-existing and documented, but they knew we had no recourse because we had graduated and scattered around the country. But it was only a few dollars and there was really no way to file a claim because nobody would be able to make it back Happy Valley to do so.

Stone Hall in South for Summer of 1967 tri-mester (ordinarily a girls dorm -- no urinals, low shower heads, Tampex machine on the bathroom wall).
Shunk Hall two years (1967-69), then Park Forest Villas (1969-71) on Aaron Drive. Met lots of good people while hitchhiking to and from campus.

Three years in Holmes Hall. Final year out at Park Forest.

How about the walk from one of the computer compilers out to Park Forest at @ 3 AM in mid-winter?

Berks and Schuylkill campuses freshman year, Beaver Hall soph, Bluebell Apts the next 2 years and a very small apt by myself the last term before graduation. I intentionally took a "redshirt" year to get in another football season(1970) because the only thing waiting for me after graduation was the draft. Fortunately, I got in the reserves, so I'm still alive.

Went to McKeesport Campus for Fr and So yrs, and lived at home. (69-71)
Jr and Sr years lived at Park Forest Apts with 3 friends from McKeesport. (71-73)
Had a great time with those guys, but being so far from campus and with no car meant I missed a lot of the on campus stuff which I wish I could have experienced. Unfortunately, my folks didn't have the funds to be able to put me up on campus. Can't remember exactly my share of the rent but I think it was $40 something a month. Food was $10 a week and we ate the same thing every single week, bought mostly at Dean's. Climbed that water tower on Park Forest a few times. Hitch hiked to campus and back, and never, never had a problem getting a ride quickly. People were very thoughtful, and I'll never forget Cabrini (oh how I wonder what may have been).
Only 1 roommate had a car...a TR6. (RIP Anthony Andrew Barr). Parked in that damn East lot. One winter he rode me in and I had a bad cold. I started shivering going across the lot and could not stop. Was shaking unbelievably and thought I'd die before I got to the Forum.
A lot of who I am today was shaped by my experience at Penn State. Remembering back, it seems a great number of us were very similar in perhaps humble backgrounds and limited experiences of being away from home. I'd also venture to say that a very large number at that time were the first from their families to attend college. For me, with 2 older brothers who didn't go to college, it was a bit of burden to carry. I later realized that as a manager, many people I would hire who were the first from their family to go to college, seemed to carry that burden of having to strive hard to be successful in order to make that investment by their parents seem worth it. Many times not so much for the benefit of their parents, but to themselves. It became an intangible I'd look for when interviewing candidates.

But I ramble....

Transfer from Behrend - Beam Hall 1978-80 (saw Joe frequently) - then Park Hill Apts for grad school

Thompson Hall in West as a Frosh in 1966. Next two years in a frat. Rented a house on Pugh Street with 5 buddies in my senior year.

Small world...I think I have seen 2 or 3 different posters mention Beam Hall. I lived there my Freshman year (1985-86), then
they converted it to offices so I moved over to Holmes Hall in '86-87. After 2 years of dorm life and sharing a bathroom with 75
other dudes I decided to move off campus. Lived in Southgate Apts for a year and quickly discovered that was too far off campus. So, I spent my senior year at The Graduate across from the Atherton Hilton. It was brand new at the time. Kegerator in the living room. Lots of great looking coeds in the building. Life was good!

Lived in Stuart Hall (East Halls) two terms, Irvin Hall (West Halls) seven terms, Jordan Hall (West Halls) one term and last two terms in an apartment downtown. So for the most part I was a dorm rat.

I spent three years in East Halls dorms (Pennypacker & Stuart) because, after my freshman year, all my friends stayed. As a senior, 3 of us moved into an apartment (Beaver Terrace). I never regretted not being in a fraternity.

When I attending (a long time ago) it was required to live in the dorm for most (if not all) of you freshman year. Mine was Pollock Hall.

Entire time in Hamilton. Considered moving off campus but it was just too convenient in West Halls. Played basketball every night in Rec Hall. Had several well known football players as neighbors which is why I am reluctant to claim PSU players are that different from other schools.

North halls my freshman year. Then a fraternity my last three years.

Three years in Hamilton Hall in West Halls and Senior year at Garner Court on Garner Ave near the theater. West Halls was so great and convenient. My son is now in East Halls as a freshman and he loves it there.

That's pretty much my experience 1966 to 1971 ( I was on the five year plan). Shunk, pledged then de-pledged, Nittany 21, apartment at College and Hetzel. The Nittany Halls time was pretty much unsupervised as we did not have an RA.

Freshman & Sophomore years in Jordan Hall in West Halls. Just a stones throw to Rec Hall where we spent every available hour. Last two years were in a rooming house across the street from the Post Office, Harvey House. Great times!

I was in Leete Hall in North Halls freshman year and witnessed the Leon Mickens meltdown that got him expelled; bad situation. Lived in a fraternity after that.

162 Hamilton, at first. Then, The Skeller after that. Explains why my grades never improved.
